STEAM

The University of Sydney STEM Academy has supported our STEAM team in the refinement of our Emergency Housing Challenge. Mr Stuart Palmer, mentor of Mater Dei, helped the team to create an engaging, real world challenge with an appropriate scale.

Students showcased their Emergency Housing companies to students from Sacred Heart Catholic School and Mater Dei Primary School.

Take a brief look at their journey:

This is what some our students experienced throughout the Challenge:

I worked on Google Sketch-up and created a 3D virtual model of our emergency house design. At the start of the project I sketched out on a piece of paper a map of our emergency house design and then drew it out on chalk on the concrete in life size. Charlotte Davidson

I contributed to our success all throughout the 16 hours that we had to make our final design. At the start, I was given the role to work with Mr. Harpley in making a 3D model of our design on Adobe illustrator. When I printed my design out I shared all my docs into Canvas collaborations so that my whole group could access them. When the day came to present, Jessica and I set up the floor plan on the ground and we presented our design to all our teachers and students to the best of our ability.

My role was architect, so it was my job to design the house and create a 3D model of it. Using SketchUp, I could add real hardware to my home on a real-life scale, and create the rooms, doors and windows that I wanted. During the showcase, my house was picked to be on VR and my job was to walk the audience through the floor plan and show them the 3D model.
