Out (door Ed) and about

Outdoor & Environmental Studies

On Monday 12 July, a waste audit was conducted with the year 9 and 10 Outdoor and Environmental studies classes at MGSC. The audit sampled the waste generated from the recess break around the canteen and gymnasium.

The aim of the audit was to:

  • Identify the main areas of resource loss in landfill bins
  • Provide a snapshot of the waste generated over a single day
  • Provide an estimation of annual generation rates of waste

This information will be used by the Outdoor Education classes to investigate ways the school could implement waste reduction initiatives and education campaigns on correct bin usage.

Over the coming week, students will put together an education campaign to further educate our students to reduce their waste.

Everyone can get involved by practicing some of the following:

-          Participate in plastic free July

-          Use a reusable bottle/cup for beverages on-the-go.

-          Use reusable grocery bags, and not just for groceries.

-          Purchase wisely and recycle.

-          Compost it!

-          Avoid single-use food and drink containers and utensils.

-          Buy second hand items and donate used goods.

Year 10 Outdoor Education: Beach Walk and Meditation

On Thursday 15 July, the day before the snap lockdown the Year 10 Outdoor Education class walked down to Mentone Beach.

The students took time out of their day to stop for a meditation session; listening to the waves, birds flying overhead and sounds of people playing.

It is important now during lock down that we all take some time out of our day for meditation practices; this could be dancing, reading a book, listening to music, exercising, journaling, or just being still and present.

Students then spent some time observing the environment that we live in and expressing gratitude for our surrounds. After our waste session earlier in the week, we spent some time collecting small plastics in the sand, an initiative called ‘take three from the sea’.

We can all play a role every time we go to the beach to collect three pieces of plastic to keep our oceans beautiful!
