Night and Day in Science
This term, 3-28 are learning about Night and Day in Science. So far, we have learnt about how the Earth rotates around the sun. A whole rotation takes 365 days! While the Earth is rotating around the sun, the Earth is also spinning on its invisible axis at the same time. One full spin on the axis takes 24 hours. That’s how we get night and day, light and dark, sunrise and sunset. When learning about this, we decided to explore how shadows work. Shadows work when an opaque object blocks the shining light or sun. We went out to the courtyard one sunny morning and traced over our shadows. Then, we went back in the afternoon sun to trace over our shadows again in the same spot. We explored how our shadows changed shape and position depending on where the sun is in the sky. The sun changes position in the sky as the day goes on, which is what makes our shadow change at different times of the day!
