ALUMNI INVOLVED IN THE YEAR 9 CAREERS AND INTERPERSONAL DAY

This week there was such a positive energy at North Geelong Secondary College when we welcomed back seven alumni to work with our Year 9 students as part of their Careers and Interpersonal Day. Thank you, Melissa Turner ’04, Daniel Lesic ’04, Armina Makas ’09, Jordan Grossman ’10, Kray Real ’11, Dragana Mrkaja ’11 and Daniel Nouwen ’18 for taking the time to give back to your old school and share your wisdom with our students.

Year 9 students heard about:

  • the pathways followed by each alum.
  • subjects studied during secondary school, including which ones best prepared them for their chosen field.
  • what a typical day and week looks like in their various roles and professions.
  • opportunities taken at secondary school and beyond (as well as missed opportunities!)
  • and advice they would give their teenage selves.

Our alumni shared a morning tea and went down memory lane when their past teachers and current assistant principal, Julie Andrews conducted a tour around the school. It was so nice hearing our alumni chat about what used to be, whilst sharing some of their fondest memories which included playing the timeless game that ‘united students’: down ball.

I look forward to welcoming many more past students back to the college.

Making a case for a career in law

When students think about a career in law, the first image that often comes to mind is a lawyer passionately arguing a case to a judge and jury. Think Legally Blonde or The Castle.

But jobs in law are many and diverse – and it can be hard for students to get an accurate picture of the industry without access to real-life role models.

That’s where Ourschool’s alumni program Industry Insights series comes in. The recent livestream Q&A featured public high school grads from some of Ourschool’s partner schools who work in different areas of the law:

  • Emma Berry, intellectual property & trade lawyer at Macpherson Kelley (Fountain Gate Secondary College alum)
  • Samuel Formica, family lawyer at Cahill & Rowe Family Law (Geelong High School alum)
  • Sanela Osmanovic, superannuation and financial services senior associate at KHQ Lawyers (North Geelong Secondary College alum)
  • Zoran Petric, Barrister at the Victorian Bar (McKinnon Secondary College alum)

They spoke about their passions, school days, post-school pathways and what it’s really like to be a lawyer. Thank you to our speakers for generously giving their time to advise and encourage students across Ourschool’s 24 partner schools, North Geelong Secondary College.

Thank you also to Slater and Gordon Lawyers, who sponsored the livestream, as well as their Practice Group Leader Manisha Blencowe, another guest speaker and an alum of Princes Hill Secondary College. Manisha provided a broad overview of career opportunities in the legal profession.
