Kinder learns about Volleyball

Over the last 4 weeks the primary and infant school classes have had a very, very enjoyable time learning all about volleyball under the wonderful coaching of Jayden Norsworthy. We learnt that volleyball is a team sport played with a ball and a net. There are teams on each side of the net. One team hits the ball over the net and into the other team's court. The other team need to then hit the ball back over the net and in bounds within three tries without letting the ball touch the ground. Team volleyball is played indoors on a hard court with 6 people per team. We think volleyball was a lot of fun to play. Some of us even think we would like to play in the real competition one day. We also think it will take a lot of practice and that it would be good to be tall and that you should be able to jump high to play well. In Kindy we have a little bit of growing to do before we can get the ball easily over the net, but we had a lot of fun trying.

Stage 3 Sydney Camp

Years 5 and 6 recently enjoyed 3 days exploring Sydney, learning about our history and government. The students recalled the parts of the trip in different forms of writing, including some great use of creative licence.

Enjoying our new room!

This year, the Primary Learning Support Team or TLC, as known by our students, has taken up residence in a wonderful new space. This bigger room has allowed us to support more children in their learning. We have been able to run groups simultaneously and have spread out our individual work stations so that students are able to work without being distracted. The room is very light and welcoming and staff and students alike are enjoying the benefits it offers.

Stage 2 Science - Fair Tests

In Science, Stage 2 has been discovering how to conduct ‘fair tests’.

We have learnt that to conduct a fair test all the materials and methods need to be the same, except for what we are testing. We sought to test which coloured crayon was the best to take to the beach. Our experiment, therefore, tested which crayon took the longest to melt.

We used crayons, all of the same size, a stopwatch, a hair dryer, tape and a phone book. We used different coloured crayons. We taped the coloured crayons to the phone book. We kept a hair dryer blowing on them while we recorded the time at which each coloured crayon started to melt. Here are some of our written observations:

‘We melted crayons and we found out the yellow crayon melted the slowest and the white crayon melted the quickest at 1 minute. Black was the 3rd to melt. Blue was the 2nd to melt. We used a hair dryer and a stopwatch. ’ – William A

‘We are learning about the power of heat. We were trying to find out which crayon I should take to the beach on a hot day. Here are the results:
  • White – 1 minute
  • Black – 1 minute 25 seconds
  • Blue – 3 minutes 10 seconds
  • Red – 3 minutes 30 seconds
  • Yellow – 5 minutes 30 seconds’

A class of worms!

What can schools do with food waste? We may have found the solution!

With the advice of Mrs Paula Smith (wife to former principal Mr Phil Smith), Mrs Parker's class, Years 3-4 is trialing a new way of disposing of food scraps at school. This new process involves a compost bin known as a solar cone. The bin is vermin proof and is designed to feed the soil as the food scraps break down. Students are able to place any scraps from fruit scraps or sandwich crusts (not that we would throw those out)! Students were involved in filling the bed and planting it. They will maintain it, feed it (with the scraps) and hopefully be able to use vegetables grown in the bed. Ultimately, if it works, a cycle will be created with the input being food scraps and water. We look forward to seeing the results of the class' scraps! If the scheme is successful, it will be rolled out across other classes.
