Music Camp

Having narrowly escaped the COVID restrictions, we were in full swing preparing for the music camp when the weather struck. Six days to go and we didn’t have a venue. With the prospect of the camp being cancelled for a second year looming, there was only one thing to do. A phone call to a very generous camp manager and quick distribution of new permission forms meant that the music could indeed go on. And so, in the last week of term two, 80 music students descended on Rutherford Park in Blampied for our annual music camp.

The students formed an eclectic assortment of ensembles including a Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra, a percussion ensemble, three Choirs, a string orchestra, a guitar ensemble, numerous student-led jams. Their work at camp culminated in the formation of an all-in performance which included a Symphony Orchestra, Drum Line and Massed Choir performing Panic at the Disco’s High Hopes during the final assembly.

These ensembles rehearsed throughout the camp with the goal of doing a professional recording facilitated by the VET Music Industry class on the last day of term. During this day, students were given the opportunity to experience a variety of recording techniques including the use of a Decca Tree, which is the industry standard when recording large ensembles. The students created outstanding recordings which are now being mixed and mastered so that we can share them with the wider college community.

Many thanks go out to all the students, teachers and camp staff involved who worked tirelessly to make the camp a success.
