FOOD COLLECTION FOR ST VINCENT DE PAUL

The Mini Vinnies would like to thank parents and students of SFS who donated non-perishable food and toiletries to donate to those who are less fortunate within our community.

The total number of items collected was 412. The Hampton Park St Vincent de Paul Conference will collect the items next term.

Here are the final results for each of the Houses and the amount of items they collected:

 PATRICK          127

 BOSCO            127

TERESA             83

 MACKILLOP    75

Congratulations to Bosco and Patrick for winning this House Competition! Well done!!! Remember this will go towards the total points for the Community Spirit Shield which will be presented to the winning House at the end of the year.

THANK YOU!!!!

I would like to say a great big thank you to the Mini Vinnies. This group of students made a commitment to attend a meeting every Tuesday at lunchtime and eagerly come to the meetings, giving up their play time. I have never heard a complaint! They work so hard making sure their actions are completed!!! I am so proud of them. Without them we would have not collected all the money that we did for Project Compassion or all the food and toiletries for the Hampton Park Conference.

Thank you to the Mini Vinnies. I look forward to working with you again next term!!!

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

Jesus heals a woman and raises Jairus's daughter from death

Last Sunday we heard Jesus calming the storm, the first of four miracles that Jesus performs at the Sea of Galilee. Each of these four miracle stories offers us a glimpse at Jesus’ power. This week we hear about the third and fourth miracles.

The Gospel explains two stories that features the healing ministry of Jesus. In the first story Mark tells us about a father’s great love for his dying daughter.

Jairus is a synagogue official, a man of considerable standing in the Jewish community. Distraught over his daughter’s poor health, he approaches Jesus and asks him to heal her. He falls at Jesus’ feet and begs Jesus to go and lay hands on his daughter.

As Jesus leaves with Jairus, a second person seeks healing from Jesus.

The second story tells us about a desperate woman who had been long afflicted with a haemorrhage. She touches Jesus’ cloak, saying, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured”. She secretly touches Jesus from behind and is immediately cured.

In response, Jesus turns and asks, “Who touched me?”.The crowds were pushing in on Jesus, and yet he, knew that power had gone out of him and asked, ‘who touched me’. The woman could have remained anonymous, yet at Jesus’ question she steps forward and acknowledges what she had done. Jesus responds by acknowledging her as a model of faith and sends her away in peace.

The request for healing is itself a courageous act of faith, and yet very different circumstances are represented by the lives of each suffering person.

To Jairus Jesus says, “Do not be afraid; just have faith

To the woman Jesus says, “Daughter, your faith has saved you

The contrasts between Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage are straight forward and revealing. One is a man, the other is a woman. One is a public official, an important person in the community. The other is a woman who has lost everything to find a cure to a condition that separated her from the community. One approaches Jesus publicly. The other approaches Jesus secretly. Yet in each case, faith leads them to seek out Jesus in their time of need.

The Gospel concludes with Jesus’ instructions to remain silent about this miracle. The two people who witness Jesus’ power and authority are instructed to not speak of what they have witnessed. Each individual must make his or her own act of faith in affirming Jesus as God’s Son.

Discussion Starters

  • Someone I know whose faith is strong is . . . because . . .
  • One area of my life where I need to have stronger faith is . . .
  • One way I can grow stronger in my faith in God is . . .
