EXTENDING WIDE READING IN YEAR 9 EAL

On the second last Friday of Term 2, our Year 9 EAL class, and our teacher, Mrs Howard, walked from East Campus to the Main Campus Library. The purpose of this visit was to borrow some books for our EAL Wide Reading program during the second semester. All our EAL lessons start with reading, however, from the second semester, all our reading must be in English language only. It was a sunny day, and the students talked happily. When crossing the road, some cars stopped to let us go first. Mrs Howard taught us the correct way to show politeness and gratitude.

After a period of walking, we arrived at the Main Campus, where we met one of the McKinnon school librarians, Ms Watson. In her presentation, we learned about the different types of books in the library, how to choose your favourite books, and how to search and borrow your favourite books online.

At East Campus, students can reserve books via the Library catalogue or Google Site. Ms Watson demonstrated how to use the catalogue efficiently: by looking up the title of the book, keywords, the author as well as other ways. I chose to borrow a book of short stories in English. This book contains 99 short stories written in English, but some key words are marked in Chinese next to it. This is very useful for me to expand my vocabulary. All in all it was a very useful and meaningful visit for all of us!
