TERM 2 ART COMPETITION

The Visual Arts team are thrilled to announce the winners for the Term 2 Art Competition! The theme for Term 2 was Surrealism. Students were encouraged to explore the work of artists such as René Magritte and Salvador Dalí, and create their own dream-like, unnerving, and illogical artworks in response. As always, we received many submissions for this term's competition, and we would like to congratulate everyone on their hard work and talent!

The Art Captains and Art Teachers worked together to pick three winners for this term. Congratulations to Eli Lasnitzki (Year 12), Audrey Gelberg (Year 9) and Jane Liu (Year 8) for their exceptional artwork!

Eli Lasnitzki created a witty comic strip titled The Dripping Clock which depicts the creation of Salvador Dalí’s famous melting clock. What a fun and playful way to explore the concept of Surrealism!

Audrey Gelberg, our middle school winner, submitted a striking digital portrait of a Cat. Her unique, illustrative style really captivates the viewer.

Our junior school winner, Jane Liu, created an outstanding painting inspired by one of René Magritte’s most recognisable artworks: The Son of Man. The Art captains and teachers were very impressed by Jane’s response to the competition theme. Well done to all three of our winning artists!

I’d also like to remind everyone of our current art competition theme. This term, students are encouraged to create an artwork which will be featured on the front cover of the 2023 Thistle! Students can create and submit artwork that celebrates the McKinnon community. We are expecting it all! Use any medium or art form - we want to see the best of the best! For further details, please check Compass.

Again, congratulations to Eli, Audrey and Jane.

YEAR 8 KUMMARGEE CHALLENGE

As part of the Kummargee Challenge, Year 8 Visual Communication Design students showcase their talent by designing t-shirts inspired by First Nations designers and native flora and fauna. Following the Design Process, they meticulously planned, designed and brought their creations to life using Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe Photoshop Beta. Students also went the extra mile, creating impressive mock-ups to visualize the final product. Below are some thoughts from our Year 8s who participated in this project during Semester 1.

It was a really fun experience working through the Design Challenge in Visual Communication Design. In addition to using Adobe Photoshop, which served as the tool to create our designs, we also had to document our work in visual diaries. This unit allowed me to try out a new program and make a unique design that represented an Indigenous artist of my choice, which I found to be quite enjoyable.

The Kummargee t-shirt challenge has been the highlight of the semester. It was the perfect opportunity to let our imagination and creativity run free. The process of thinking about designs, sketching t-shirts, refining the sketches and using Photoshop to make finishing touches on it was definitely a first for me. The first semester of Visual Communication Design has been unforgettable!

We studied the flora and fauna that was native to our group’s assigned area, Kooyongkoot, and completed research on Marlie Albert. Afterwards we sketched our designs, incorporating the local flora and fauna, and the Elements and Principles used by Marlie Albert. We finished our final design in Photoshop Beta. I enjoyed this task as creating our own tees was something different.

I really enjoyed the Kummargee T-Shirt Challenge. Designing a t-shirt based on native flora and fauna was entertaining and I loved the competitive side of one design being chosen to represent the class! It helped incorporate a more realistic application of Visual Communication and Design, showing how it would feel to be a designer.
