ROBOGALS SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOP AT MONASH UNIVERSITY

On Wednesday 21 June, nine Year 8 students, Vicky Bui, Danbi Choi, Nesha Dona Gabadage, Harmehar Kohli, Linh Nguyen, Sanika Ribadia, Charlie Robbie, Alex Virbanescu and Eamonn Walker with the direction of Ms Ruby Lee, with many other fellows from various secondary schools participated in an exciting workshop situated at Monash Clayton Campus. The event took place from 10am to 12pm with all of us students, as well as teachers, starting by sharing our prior knowledge about environmental sustainability through a fun kahoot.

The university students provided us with not only essential information and knowledge about environmental sustainability, but also showed us its impact on our society. The events required us to split into groups of 4 or 5. With the helpful guidance of the hosts, all the groups successfully designed our very own water filter plumbers. Within the groups, different roles were assigned such as the researcher, the planner, the editor and the creator. After all the necessary research and thorough planning, we were able to make the best sustainable and affordable water filter with recyclable materials.

After polishing our products, each group presented their pitch and presentation of their designs. Through this process, we all garnered different ideas and thought processes. It always amazed us how the same goals could be achieved with different ideas coming together.

Through the experience, all of us had gained a better understanding of why and how we can protect our environment better by including recycled materials and eco-friendly methods to approach our projects. At the end of the workshop, a person from each group was trusted to keep their group’s design and we went back to school with the memories of that enjoyable day.

McK Chess Championship 2023

With the arrival of Term 3, the Championship season returns again. This year, the overwhelming number of entries has led to an expanded competition. The qualifiers were played over two days in the last weeks of Term 2 which brought together many players from both campuses. Already, more than 60 games of chess have been played, and more to come over the course of the main event. We thank all participants for their effort and commitment.

The championship’s main stage will be played over the next 5-6 weeks at the Main Campus (either during lunchtimes or after-school sessions).

To follow the event, please visit the official championship website.

Despite already qualified for the State Final, this zonal round provides an opportunity for the McKinnon team to book another five playing spots at the Finals if it can finish in the top 30%.

So, after five hours of competition, the McKinnon team came 6th overall out of 23 teams and 130 players. This was enough for us to qualify 10 players for the State Final later in Term 4.
