BASTILLE FESTIVAL

We celebrated Bastille Day Festival at McKinnon last Friday 14 July. A host of entertaining and educational activities were held to engage our students in the exploration of French culture, history and traditions.

The campus was abuzz with the French spirit with students indulging in croissants from local French bakery Artisanal Bakehouse, posing in a French-themed photo booth and singing the French National Anthem.

Congratulations to all students who participated and made the day a success.

YEAR 7 FRENCH THEATRE INCURSION

Towards the end of term two, all the Year 7 students that took part in learning the given language of French attended a play of The Little Prince. Personally, coming into this performance I had great expectations because I loved this book when I was a child. I expected a great journey of the little prince, travelling around space in search to find a creative adult and I got just that. Although the play was a bit too long, the actors were great, speaking both English and French perfectly. It was overall a great story and I hope future Year 7s get to experience this too.

Konstantinos Dimitrakopoulos (7B)

On the last day of term two, a few of the Year 7 classes got to be a part of a wonderful experience. We got to witness a live play of 'Le Petit Prince,' translating to 'The Little Prince.' It was a magical French play where a prince travelled to multiple planets and got to experience the wonders of each. As he lived by himself with his rose, and no one else, his only entertainment on his planet was to watch the sunset. While he journeyed to other planets, he found all the grown-ups he met very peculiar.

Once, he met a king who ruled his entire planet; bet there was no one on that planet. Then there was a woman who owned stars followed by an alcoholic, a lamplighter and a geographer. He also finds a fox, snake and pilot all of whom he becomes friends with. Overall, Le Petit Prince was an inspiring play conveying themes of friendship, love, and loneliness.

Zaina Salil (7H)

For our new unit in French on the Little Prince (or Le Petit Prince), we had a talented theatre troupe come to our school to perform a play adapted from this magical tale. Not only was the play entertaining, but as parts of it were spoken in French, it was also a pretty good opportunity to learn some new French words by reading the subtitles and figuring out what their English versions were. Not only that, but the play also had us engaged all the way through. We laughed at some scenes, clapped vigorously at some, and maybe even cried a little towards the end. All in all, there was some awesome acting, it was a very well-adapted play, and some of us learnt some new words in French!

SPANISH FILM EXCURSION - REYES CONTRA SANTA (THREE WISE KINGS AGAINST SANTA)

On Friday 16 of June, 30 students from Year 8 Spanish attended a film as part of the Spanish Film festival at the Brighton Bay Palace Cinema. They were accompanied by Mr O’Brien and Ms Gomez. The students appreciated this opportunity to experience something of Spanish culture and language.

ROULE GALETTE EXCURSIONS

Students from our four Year 9 French classes celebrated the end of the semester with visits to Roule Galette creperie in Carnegie. The two groups had a wonderful time.

The following article was written in response to the first visit:

The Year 9 French classes attended an excursion to a lovely place called Roule Galette Creperie to try French cuisine. The workers at Roule Galette Creperie were kind and welcomed us warm-heartedly. We were provided with the galette, a dish which is made of buckwheat flour that looks like a pie and filled with savoury food such as ham or egg and cheese; and crepes to order with a large variety of flavours.

It was absolutely delicious, and we also had an activity after eating where we were instructed to explore and describe the local area in French, using a map in 30 minutes. It was very challenging yet very interesting to explore the area. Overall, it was a very memorable excursion, filled with adventures and was a best chance to know more about French cuisine.

YEAR 9 LANGUAGES EXPO

With a bustling but amazing atmosphere, students over at the East Campus were enjoying the wonders of the Languages Expo on Thursday 13 June. Since Term 1, all Year 9 languages students have been working on the languages expo, preparing for the big day. On Thursday 13 June, all the languages students gathered in the languages classrooms at the beginning of period 4, ready to set up for the expo. As soon as the locker bell rang, students from both Year 8 and Year 9 were filling the rooms and outside spaces.

During the expo, there were so many different stalls for students to check out such as the German Desserts, the Eiffel Tower, Lacoste, French Fashion, French football and French speaking countries. At each of these different expo stalls, there was a unique experience up for grabs. For example, at the French Fashion expo, there was an amazing fashion show. The German students had delicious German desserts; fresh and ready to be served. Over at the Eiffel Tower expo (my group), we had a ‘time-travelling’ black human-sized box, which students could go into and learn more about the Eiffel Tower’s history. Overall, the expo ran very successfully, with over 100 students coming and going to look at our hard work.

Hopefully the 2024 expo will be just as successful as this one.

The Eiffel Tower research for the Year 9 Languages Expo
