School of Entrepreneurs

From the SOE Head of School

I hope all our families are well and experienced a smooth start to the year. I am pleased to express that Years 9-12 have commenced the year very positively and have shown a remarkable work ethic so far. Our students continue to rise to the challenge each day of stretching themselves beyond their capabilities and engaging in learning experiences that get them to think outside the square. Our students have displayed a great deal of perseverance, dedication, and commitment to their academic pursuits both for the present and post school. They are actively participating in class discussions and demonstrating a willingness to go above and beyond in their studies through our extra-curricular program.

I am confident that with the continued support of our dedicated teachers and staff, our students will continue to excel and achieve their goals in 2023. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in helping our students succeed.

Sending blessings to you all.

FROM AROUND THE GROUNDS

Beyond School, What Next? Careers Expo at CathWest

On the 28th of February, fifteen of our students across Years 10, 11 and 12, travelled to CathWest to learn more about future learning and employment pathways once they leave High School. The students had the opportunity to discuss possible career paths with representatives from CathWest, TAFE, the Australian Training Company, local universities such as the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and Western Sydney University (WSU) and other employment, apprenticeship and training organisations. Some of our Indigenous students also had the chance to learn about possible training and work experience opportunities. All in all, the day provided students with a unique chance to engage with a range of providers as they map out their future beyond school.

YEAR 11

Student Achievement - Alex Coombes

On Friday, February 24, I had the pleasure of competing in the NSW Junior Championships in Sydney Olympic Park in the Men's 100-metre frame-running event. Frame-running is an athletic sport which empowers individuals with physical disabilities to experience the feeling of being able to run. It has therefore become an incredibly enjoyable and beneficial sport in which I participate. The Junior Championships were therefore an opportunity to showcase my skills. I had the aim of beating my personal best of 29.98 seconds and succeeded, recording an official time of 26.71. I hope to continue participating in frame-running in the years to come, showing the world that anybody can do anything if they put their mind to it.

YEAR 12

St Luke's Catholic College Multimedia and EVET Entertainment students welcomed guest speaker, Sean Callinan, Head of Animation and Film from JMC Academy. Mr Callinan spoke about future pathways into multimedia and spoke about the importance of storyboarding when presenting creative ideas. This session highlighted careers in creative industries including gamification, animation, film editing, audio engineering and sound editing, entertainment management and film and media production. Most importantly, Mr Callinan spoke to each of our Year 12 Multimedia students and gave them valuable feedback on their individual major work.

St Luke's Catholic College supports authentic learning and work experiences for students. Our special thanks to Mr. Michael Vassili for hosting Year 12 student Feba and supporting her learning in Legal Studies. Feba will be applying for Bachelor of Laws degrees shortly and would like to make an impact by practising law within her local community.

HOSPITALITY NEWS

Recently some of our wonderful Year 12 students went out on work placement. The students are required to complete 70 hours over the course of the subject which runs for 2 years. This gives them both skills, knowledge and real life experience of what it's like to work in the hospitality industry. I am pleased to say all students received glowing feedback from their hosts. The students should be extremely proud of themselves, as am I.

YEAR 9 ‘WALK THE TALK’ . . .

In 2019 Women’s Community Shelters launched their Walk the Talk education initiative in fifteen Sydney schools, with 2,300 participating high school students.

A pioneering program building awareness of domestic violence and women’s homelessness, Walk the Talk empowered these young people to support local women and children in need by ‘adopting’ their local shelter.

Phase one of the program is a half-day in school workshop delivered by Enlighten Education and the Goodfellas team. Our Year 9 students were provided with an enlightening talk and discussion on family values, protective and proactive strategies for positive relationships and friendships.

Phase two is a community-based service learning opportunity; teens get to support the work of their local women’s refuge. We will be running a project that provides our Year 9 students to volunteer and support the local women's refuge by raising money, through numerous fundraising activities, creating welcome packs, assisting at gala fundraisers and helping raise awareness in their local communities plus several other initiatives.
