YCS @ St Luke’s:

"YCS" refers to "Young Christian Students," which is an international movement of young people in Catholic schools and universities who seek to live out their faith through action and reflection. The YCS movement aims to empower young people to become leaders in their communities and make positive changes in the world through moral and spiritual values. The YCS movement was founded in Belgium in 1925 and has since spread to many countries around the world.

At St Luke’s, we have an active YCS team with nearly 25 members. They meet once a week during lunch time to respond to some of the needs of the school community using the ‘See-Judge-Act’ method. The Team is being guided by the Diocesan Youth Engagement Officer, Ruperto Mediati.

The Leadership team comprises 8 members; 2 each for administration, event organisation, internal communication and external communication. The leaders for external communication are also members of the Diocesan YCS Council. Our theme for this year is ‘Inclusivity’ and the members will be using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Gospel values to implement sustainable and purposeful actions.

Liturgy

As Catholics, we have started a new season in our Liturgical Year, the season of Lent.  At St Luke’s we started this very important season with our Ash Wednesday Liturgy.  Our School of Foundations students participated in a faith filling liturgy in which Deacon Tony and some of our teachers distributed the ashes. Students were told to believe in Jesus and were marked by the sign of the cross. During his homily, Deacon Tony reminded our students to be generous in their Almsgiving, talk to God through their Prayer and Fast from something that would be significant for them. Later on, our School of Leadership and our School of Entrepreneurs also participated in a beautiful liturgy in which they were marked by the ashes on their forehead. This liturgy was specially moving as our Stage 3 choir led by Mrs. Passmore, enhanced our prayer through singing the hymns.

In this time, we have also celebrated the Stage 3 liturgy. In this liturgy, students reflected upon the meaning of the sacraments as well as the gifts and talents that God has given to each of us. In this Liturgy students were able to articulate their understanding of the sacrament and reflected upon how the Holy Spirit was present among them. I would like to take the time to thank the parents who attended and celebrated with their children in this beautiful liturgy.

Last but not least, Stages 5 and 6 have celebrated their Stage liturgy reflecting on this time of Lent. Students were able to receive the word of God and engage into the deeper meaning for their life  Furthermore, students had the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of service towards their neighbour. Students were especially encouraged to serve their neighbour through this year's appeal to donate to Caritas Australia with monetary donations and Jesuit Social Services with food donations.

Many blessings,

Isabel Ruiz Davila

Liturgy Coordinator
