Careers

Tomorrow Bound

All Year 11 VCAL students had the opportunity to attend Bendigo’s largest training and careers expo which had finally returned after being on a hiatus. Tomorrow Bound is an education, training and careers expo that highlights the range of exciting courses, pathways, and employment opportunities available throughout the City of Greater Bendigo and beyond, including Shepparton. Students learnt how to start an apprenticeship, get tips on finding a job and were able to talk to professionals about what course is right for them. Tomorrow Bound had a range of informative and interactive stands designed to both engage and inspire.

Work Experience Year 10

This week many Year 10 students are out completing work experience in the community. Whilst it has been a very cold week for them, the value of completing work experience continues to help our students make good decisions and supports their career aspirations in the future. The work experience process is a little tricky and students who have selected the elective – 'So you want a job' are stepped through the process.

This process involves the completion of safe@work modules and the filling in of signatures on Arrangement Forms, both of which must be completed before the student starts the work experience placement. Year 10 students who are not studying the subject are still able to complete work experience and should see their Careers Practitioner to have the process explained to them.

Careers visits

When students show an interest in a particular industry area, local business, industry and education institutions are invited to come to Greater Shepparton Secondary College and speak directly to students about the requirements needed to pursue that profession. These visits are advertised through the Student Bulletin and on Compass and are generally held in the Enterprise Centre, ground floor, at recess or lunchtime. Many students are attending these sessions and gaining valuable knowledge about potential career pathways in the future.

Real estate – Peter Cardamone

Twenty students gave up their lunch time to listen to Peter Cardamone explain life as a real estate agent. It is about much more than money and selling houses! Peter spoke of understanding and respecting our local community and the different cultures and customs. Being able to communicate with people and work as part of a team. It is also important to support and give back to the community via sponsorship and volunteering.

Nursing with Sarah Poppa GOTAFE

Sarah Poppa from GOTAFE ran a lunch time session to inform students about the course - Diploma of Nursing. The Diploma of Nursing is a 2 year course and is a great option for students who are completing both VCAL and VCE pathways. The Diploma of Nursing is also a pathway into the Bachelor of Nursing with students able to start in the second year of the degree on completion. Looks like we may have a few nursing in the future.  Many thanks to our community members for giving up your time to support our students.

How much will your first university degree cost?

It’s important to consider how much it will cost to study at university. Your first degree will be an ‘undergraduate’ degree, such as a bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or a university Diploma.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)

A CSP is a place at university where the Government pays for some of your course, and you pay the rest.  This is called the ‘student contribution amount’. You are entitled to a CSP at university or a higher education institute if you are:

An Australian Citizen - residing in Australia for at least one unit of study contributing towards their course of study

A New Zealand Citizen - residing in Australia for the duration of their study.

A permanent visa holder - residing in Australia for the duration of their study.

The course has Commonwealth Supported Places.

Student contribution amount:

How much you owe for your university subjects and course will vary based on:

the course discipline you are studying; and

if you are studying at a Government funded university or a private institute.

Student contribution bands

Courses fall into discipline ‘bands’. This means that no matter where you study in Australia, CSP courses will cost roughly the same. The following are the 2022 minimum bands:

Band 1 - $3985 per year

Agriculture, English, mathematics, education, clinical psychology, Indigenous and foreign languages, nursing, statistics etc.

Band 2 - $8021 per year

Other health, allied health, built environment, computing, engineering, surveying, science, environmental studies, pathology, visual and performing arts, professional pathway psychology, professional pathway social work.

Band 3 - $11,401 per year

Dentistry, medicine, veterinary science.

Band 4 - $14,630 per year

Law, accounting, administration, economics, commerce, communications, society and culture.

HECS-HELP Loan

CSP students can apply for a HECS-HELP loan providing they meet residency eligibility criteria. This loan will enable you to defer your payments until you are required to start paying back your student contribution amount. You can make voluntary repayments at any time.

Fee Paying Places

Some private institutes offer fee paying places for undergraduate courses. Students don’t receive Government subsidies and are required to pay the full fee amount. They can apply for FEE-HELP and defer their payments.

* IMPORTANT *

If you begin your enrolment with a public or private university and apply for a CSP, HECS-HELP or FEE HELP, you must have passed at least 50 % of your total attempted units (subjects) in order to remain eligible for any of these schemes.
