From the Leadership Team

Last Tuesday 24th May Greater Shepparton Secondary College experienced a power outage as a result of a car accident that was completely out of our control. Until the power was restored, we were able to provide full onsite supervision and the weather proved amenable to outside activities. I would like to thank our parents, carers, and students for their understanding, and we appreciate our school community’s efforts during this unexpected event.

ABC Takeover

On the 19th May a number of staff and students attended the Red-Carpet Gala screening of ABC Takeover. Over the past few months, a team of ABC producers have been working in regional Victoria with more than 1000 young people.

From that pool, forty-four winners were selected to work with the ABC Takeover team to produce stories for the ABC. The stories highlight the diversity and bravery of young people across the Greater Shepparton region. They tell the stories of reconnecting with cultural identity through traditional dance; working with Yorta elders to remember identity; starting a honey business; and twins helping each other through cystic fibrosis.

Ten of our students were selected winners and they proudly told their stories on film. These students are:

Nattaya Guligo Year 9

Bella Barton Year 9

Ellisa Francis Year 10

Juliana Safari Year 10

Mohammad Karimi Year 10

Jayden Lamb Year 10

Jamila Sudi Year 9

Jay Bee Bryant Year 9

Stephanie Ludlow Year 10

Lucy Ludlow Year 10

The ABC also teamed with Triple J and visited our college during the week to conduct song writing workshops with our students. Staff experienced the beautiful music the students produced at the Curriculum Day. Many opportunities will be created for our student population to experience the music and listen to the songs. We have so many amazing students at our college that we should be so proud of.

National Sorry Day

On Thursday 26th May a group of our students and staff, along with our College Captains, attended the National Sorry Day Ceremony at Monash Park to show their respect to the Stolen Generation. This is an Australia-wide observance held each year on 26th May. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families, and communities. Olivia Judd and Rowan Farren represented our college in reading to the gathering about the awareness and importance of this day. A special thanks to the staff who supported our students at the event. This marked the start of National Reconciliation Week from 27th May to 3rd June.

Real Schools

On Wednesday 1st June, Adam Voight from REAL Schools presented a follow-up session, from our Curriculum Day with Cassie Kitani, on Respectful Relationships. This is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from foundation to Year 12. It is all about embedding a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community. Cassie Kitani and Adam Voight are going to be working with the staff at GSSC to promote and model respect, positive attitudes, and behaviours. This work will assist staff to teach our students how to build healthy relationships, resilience, and confidence.

VCE Unit One Exams

The VCE Unit One exams will be held at the VISY Care Centre on Parkside Drive in the week commencing Monday 6th June and finishing on Friday 10th June. The exams are intended to replicate the examination conditions of the VCE Unit 3/4 exams with the clear aim of preparing students for these external exams. Hence, the reason we are conducting the exams at the same site as the VCAA external exams, with a special exam schedule and the relevant examination conditions.

Students are to make their own way to and from the venue and GSSC has organised for food to be available for purchase at the site. Students are permitted to wear comfortable and warm casual clothing and all VCE Unit 1 classes will be cancelled for exam week.

Year 10 Exams

The Year 10 exams will  be held on Wednesday 15th June, Thursday 16th June, and Friday 17th June. They will be held in the timetabled classroom and will be 1½ hours in length. Remember the double sessions are 112 minutes long.
