Vaping
There is a common misconception, especially amongst young people that vapes and vaping are harmless and are a safe alternative to smoking. The research suggests that this couldn’t be further from the truth. The graphic below shows just 10 dangers associated with vaping and while there are more, these are perhaps the most significant, especially for the growing and developing adolescent.
I recently spoke at the College assembly about these dangers and reminded students that we have a zero-tolerance approach to anyone using vapes in school or in school uniform (before or after school). The consequence for students involved is immediate suspension, with repeat offenders facing having their enrolment reviewed by the Principal. Additionally, students caught supplying vapes to other students would be immediately suspended from school and have their enrolment immediately reviewed.
Attendance
The first aspect of any pastoral care program starts with attendance - it is difficult to attend to a student’s wellbeing if they are not present at school. We regularly see students missing one day a week or fortnight and other students who are regularly arriving late and/or leaving early.
Parents are reminded that everyday counts and students should only be kept from school then they are unwell or have an important personal appointment that cannot be made outside of school time. We want all our students to be successful in their learning. To do that, the first step is to be present here at school.
Below are some calculations of missing just a little bit of time when it is a regular occurrence.
