From the Assistant Principal

Kristy Hannan-Cuthbertson

Dear Families,

LADIES’ LUNCHEON – What a fabulous way to spend a Friday afternoon, catching up with friends and developing new connections with members of our school community. There were many OGPS faces that enjoyed a delicious lunch with entertainment and spot prizes at the picturesque Ocean Grove Surf Club last Friday. A very special thank you to Georgia Fiske, Steph King, Adele Smith, Pip Diery and Sarah Ottens (Parents and Friends Group) who organised this fabulous event. The P & F did an amazing job of putting the occasion together and it is anticipated that it will be even bigger next year. The importance of connection and networking is more important than ever, especially after what we’ve been through for the past 2 years. Have a peek at the feature page in this week’s newsletter and keep an eye out for next year’s date.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK – This week OGPS will be involved in activities and programs that are specific to National reconciliation Week (THEME - Be Brave. Make Change). As part of these activities, students were invited to wear casual dress today and bring a gold coin donation. The money received will be put towards an Indigenous Art project to be completed at school.

YEAR FIVE CAMP – It proved to be another great camp for our Year 5 cohort last week. The students were involved in bike riding, archery, cooking, a high ropes course and loads of other activities. Camp experiences are so beneficial for our students, socially, emotionally and academically. Thank you to the staff that attended the camp to support our students.

LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIPS – Our Year 6 students headed off in various directions last Friday to participate in the Lightning Premiership competition. The soccer team has made it through to the next round – congrats! Overwhelming positive reports regarding our students came from staff, parents and teachers from other schools. Well done Ocean Grovers.

EDUCATION WEEK – We hope our parents/carers enjoyed the opportunity to pop into school last Monday and have a look at their child’s classroom. No doubt it was buzzing with activity. On Wednesday we also had many prospective families attend one of the three open tours available for new families. As always, the families were suitably impressed by our classrooms, facilities and most of all, our students.

ON THE BIG STAGE - Scott and Andy were invited to deliver a presentation at the Principal’s Conference in Melbourne earlier this week. This involved a 45 minute presentation on our Mental Health and Well Being program at OGPS, to over 1,700 Principals. The pressure was on but no doubt they both did us all proud. Congratulations to both Scott and Andy on this terrific achievement.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE DAY AND CURRICULUM DAY -

Thursday 2nd June - Professional Practice Day

Victorian schools have been recommended to hold their Term 2 Professional Practice Day on the same day for all staff (dates will vary between individual schools). OGPS staff will participate in curriculum planning, student assessment and reporting activities on their Professional Practice Day. Students are not required to attend school on this day.

Friday 3rd June – Curriculum Day

Staff will be involved in a day of professional learning with Narissa Leung, an Australian Literacy consultant who specialises in the 6 + 1 traits of writing. The learning will support the staff’s ongoing commitment and continued development of writing, as set out in the school’s annual implementation plan. Students are not required to attend school on this day.
