The Monster in the Maze sets a new bar

Performances of The Monster in the Maze have left audiences enthralled by this unique work. A modern one hour opera by Jonathan Dove telling the story of Theseus and the Minotaur was a true Trinity community production. Students across Junior and Senior schools along with girls from Mercedes and Ursula Frayne played the rolls of the children’s and youth choruses. Alumni, from Trinity, Mercedes and St Brigid’s Colleges, many of whom had siblings in the youth chorus played the adult chorus and Old Boy Matthew Dixon (2012) sung the role of Theseus. Commendations must go to Kizito Mutoya (year 12) and Maddy Wickham-Brown (year 12 Mercedes) for their wonderful portrayals of the roles of Daedalus and the Mother of Theseus.

Kudos must go to Sholto Foss (class of 2021), a member of the adult chorus, who stepped up to sing the role of Theseus when on the final night COVID forced Matthew Dixon into isolation. With his stunt double Xavier Nicoletto (year 11) in the fight scene, the show went on to great acclaim.

Senior Trinity and Mercedes music students also joined the music staff and colleagues in the ranks of the orchestra with the Minotaur band comprising members of the Victoria Park Brass Band including Declan Ryan (class of 2020) and Willem Lamers (class of 2020). On the technical side thanks go to Brightside Productions and to Taylor Hannah (class of 2021) for his assistance.

Immense thanks must go to the cast and crew of the show and the production team of Dr Robert Braham, Ms Laura Furse, Mrs Paula Nicoletto, Mrs Anne Clarke, Mr Ben Mitchell and Mrs Lisa Laurino for the many, many rehearsal hours and for producing such a wonderful modern day opera. Special thanks for the behind the scenes support from the FOPA, makeup team and front of house volunteers.
