From the Principals' Desk

Katherine Warriner - Acting Assistant Principal

Term 2 has been full of events and activities and, as a shorter than usual term, all students and staff are looking forward to the upcoming long weekend as a chance to rest and refresh for the last couple of weeks until the holidays. We continue to be impacted by COVID and are also experiencing increased illness from colds and flu. We would like to thank the staff and students for their continued mask wearing, hand hygiene and staying home when they are unwell. This is helping to keep transmission in the school community low.

PESA Regional Final

Nossal High School hosted the Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) Regional Final on Tuesday 24 May. The school was represented with excellent presentations by Mila Vargas and Lina Afanasyeva. Mila won the Regional Final and is now through to the State Semi Finals on Thursday 16 June.

Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday 25 May the entire school travelled to Casey Fields for the annual Athletics Carnival. On a clear, cold day under blue skies the students dressed up, ran, jumped, threw things and cheered for their House. Pegasus were the ultimate winners of the event, followed by Phoenix, Griffin and finally Garuda. All participants competed to the very best of their ability and are to be commended for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The annual Staff vs Student relay was run, with the Staff the victors, again.

Digital Delivery Day

The day following the Athletics Carnival was the first synchronous Digital Delivery Day for 2022. Students were able to work from home and participated in their usual classes for the day. These events are part of the adult learning culture at Nossal, helping students to develop skills they will need in the workplace of the future. All students were asked to keep their cameras on during lessons, dress appropriately and participate fully to prepare them for the eventual online meetings they will participate in once they enter the workplace. The School Captains addressed the whole school during Nossal Time after which all students participated in the Attitudes to School Survey, an annual survey that provides data on the teaching and learning environment at Nossal.

Year 10 Humanities Excursion

On Thursday 2 June and Friday 3 June all Year 10 Humanities students attended an excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance and the Jewish Holocaust Museum as part of their study of World War II. Students were extremely well behaved and respectful as they visited these important reminders of the cost of World War II.

The Real Inspector Hound

On Thursday 2 June the Unit 3/4 Theatre Studies students performed The Real Inspector Hound as part of their assessment for the year. The students had obviously put a lot of work into planning, rehearsing and staging the performance and the result was a thoroughly enjoyable evening for the audience.

An Opportunity for Parents

As we head into the last three weeks of term we have a significant number of upcoming events. One of these is the online presentation which is happening online this Wednesday 8 June, in association with the Nossal PFA.

The presentation, focussed on Building Resilient Families, will be presented by the Building Better Brains organisation who gave a similar (and very successful) presentation last year.

Upcoming Excitement!

As I write, the Year 9 to 12 French and Japanese students are participating in enrichment activities for Language Diversity Day. This will culminate in a Whole School Assembly celebrating language in its many forms. The Year 12s are looking forward to their Formal at Vogue Ballroom on Thursday 9 June. The coming weekend will be an extra long weekend for students as staff will be spending Friday 10 June marking and writing reports and on Monday 13 June we all have a holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. The Year 9s will be heading off on camp to Roses Gap on Tuesday 14 June. The Year 10s will be participating in a Wellbeing Day on Monday 20 June. The last day of Term 2 will end at 2.30pm on Friday 24 June.
