Nurse Camp 2019

This is a report by Lucy Campbell of the MLHD nurse camp, held earlier this week, to immerse students in a nursing environment and give them the opportunity to experience first-hand what it takes ;to be a nurse in regional NSW. The application process was highly competitive with only 20 students being selected from well over 100 applicants from around the Riverina, Lucy and Mady King were selected from MCC. The students graduated with all of them excited about pursuing a career in nursing!

On Tuesday Madelyn King and Lucy Campbell arrived at Lake Talbot tourist park to begin our 3 days of nurse camp. We only knew each other whilst the rest knew no one at all. We were all strangers from different parts of the Murrumbidgee. We were welcomed by big smiles from Bec and Mel as we got there we signed in and received our packs for the three days and where given our rooms and unpacked and met our roommates for the time we would be there. Everyone in the camp soon gathered in the rec room where we would meet our team for the next days. We played games to get to know each other and by one o’clock we became great friends. We headed to the Narrandera Hospital for some workshops to get us started for the week. We got placed into teams and made team names for our new groups mine was “scrubs”  my first workshop was with Tony a mental health nurse he was from Scotland and was one amazing person to listen to. He understood where people needed help. He was a great teacher and role model for us future nurses. We then moved on to a workshop that would teach us about the nurses code of conduct and why we have it. We then got a tour of the hospital and found out all about what type of health services are provided in Narrandera, our last workshop for the day was learning about the lungs, brain, heart, kidneys, liver and skin and whereabouts they live in the body. We then got back on the bus and had karaoke all the way back to the tourist park. Later we got a visit from two lecturers from CSU. They hosted a trivia night on different parts of nursing. Human anatomy, nursing in general and the proper names for certain doctors and practices. Wednesday was a more practical day, our first workshop was presented by Mel teaching us about ISBAR which is a way of communication during any form of handover. Our next one was another talk from Tony about looking after our own well-being especially when being a nurse &  we got given a self care plan. We then got a fun talk fun Nicky about care and compassion for patients and colleagues. We also learnt about infection control and hand hygiene which was a really handy tip. After that we learnt how to take a basic set of obs and then got to practice on each other. We then had lunch provided by the hospital and whilst eating lunch we a talk from paramedics after lunch we got to have a look inside the ambulance it was so awesome how many different packs where inside of it. We then learnt how to take care of snake or spider bites and any sort of sprain. We then learnt about how to make a bed with a patient in it, it was both challenging and exciting experience. We then learnt cpr and DRAABC yet another life skill we learnt on this camp. After that we learnt how to save a choking child and how to deal with allergic reactions using an Epi pen. We then learned basic wound care and to sterilise open wounds. Thursday we went straight to where our role plays would be performed. They had actors playing patients and we got to practice all the skills we learnt over the past days on them and got assessed on them, and given our scrubs. That was the end of our nurse camp and I had an amazing time met amazing people made lifelong friends. I would highly recommend this to anyone who gets the chance to attend this amazing nurse camp.
