National Flag Retirement at MCC

A unique learning experience was had by year 10 elective history students this week. Students from the class engaged in a flag retirement ceremony. The flag serves as a symbol of our country, so it must be flown with dignity and respect. When the flag has become unfit for flying it must be disposed of in a respectful manner. Students spent two periods learning about the history of our flag both nationally and the actual flag we had flying here at Marian. A small ceremony was held attended by the Principal, the Assistant Principals and Ms Forrest alongside the year 10 elective history class. The class led the service with a mini-history lesson of our nation’s flag and the myriad of events that flag has flown over here at Marian. The flag was then retired and a minute silence was observed as well as a rendition of the National Anthem.

At MCC we take immense pride in the raising of our Nation’s flag alongside the Australian Aboriginal Flag and our College Flag an activity that occurs daily by year 7 students as an aspect of their school service. This is just a small snapshot of some of the excellent and often abstract quality learning experiences that students are able to partake in here at MCC.
