Magis

The 2019 Magis Awards Breakfast will be held this Monday 28 October at 7:30am in the library. Awards presented will include all second semester interschool and College gifted and talented competitions plus major Magis awards for the whole year.  Seventy students are on the list to receive awards, and emails have been sent home inviting parents. Recipients include a number of students who are not in the Magis or Altiora program but have won awards for achievements in competitions like WADL Debating and chess that are run by Magis.

Congratulations to Ben Linsten who is our new Magis captain for 2020. As in 2019 we will have a Year 12 committee of three key leaders in the program, with Alex Panther and Lorian Marshall assisting Ben and Magis leaders from other years.  This year’s captain Rory Hewson has been magnificent in the role, and has been superbly supported on the committee by Charlie Richards and Cullen Binet.  Rory, Charlie and Cullen have set a great example to all students in the program by the excellence of their performances, particularly in areas like public speaking, debating, mooting, and mock trials where they have had so many successes and represented the College with great distinction. They have also modeled servant leadership by coaching younger students, delivering keynote addresses at Magis Academic Breakfasts, and by their enthusiasm and support for the Magis Program. They have made a wonderful contribution to the development of Magis and to the College, and we are deeply grateful.

There are still several major Magis highlights to come in 2019.  Apart from the Awards Breakfast, we have a John XXIII Year 9 Team in the Quest Competition  at UWA in week 4,  the Year 8 and 10 teams leave for the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions at Yale University in USA in ten days, the next Space Camp 2020 meeting will be held at the College on November 6,  and we look forward to some great exhibits at the Magis Semester two Year 7  Personal Project Opening on November 20.
