Diocesan Cricket

On 20 November the Years 7-10 Diocesan cricket team played their first game against St Mary's Gunnedah at Donnelly Playing fields Gunnedah. St Mary’s batted first in the 20 over per side contest and reached 7-131. A steady flow of wickets to our bowlers early on along with some good fielding had St Mary’s in trouble, until a lower order partnership added some respectability to their score. Kilian Apen bowled really well to claim 2-10 from 4 overs, whilst Eoin Shepherd snared 2-29. Nathaniel Thrift also picked up 1-12.

In reply, Nicholas O’Connor opening the batting was very unlucky to be run out for no score from the first ball of the innings. From then on, there was some great batting from Kilian Apen and Ben Chick. The boys batted superbly hitting to all parts of the ground and looking very confident throughout their innings, with Kilian scoring 72 not out and Ben finishing on 56 not out. The winning runs were hit with 3 overs remaining. The game was played in great spirit, and the sportsmanship shown by both teams was a credit to themselves and their school. A big thank you to Mr Tim Godden for driving the bus and coaching the boys. Well done!

Diocesan Cricket v O’Connor Catholic College Armidale

On 29 November the years 7-10 McCarthy cricket team played against O’Connor Catholic College of Armidale at Riverside playing fields Tamworth. Batting first we made 8 for 116 off the 20 overs. A competitive total against some good bowling from the opposition. Noah Dunnill top scored with a hard hitting 33 with a couple of memorable sixes being a highlight. Nathan Summers contributed with a handy 16 not out at the end of the innings. A few players got starts but were out to some accurate bowling and good catching. Nathan Summers added some valuable runs at the end of the innings.

In reply O’Connor got off to a quick start before an excellent catch by Ben Chick off the bowling of Nick O’Connor brought the first wicket. Eoin Shepard bowled a good line and length and was rewarded with a wicket and Joe Mitchell in his first bowling spell ever in a cricket game picked up the other wicket. Some strong batting from O’Connor saw them come home with a comfortable win. Thanks to all the students for their efforts, it has been a great year in cricket.
