School Captain News

The last two weeks have been action packed filled with lots of fun activities! Some of the activities include: Camp (all Year Five to Sixes were lucky enough to enjoy), Open Day and Galilee Athletics Carnival, which will determine who will be competing in the next Dendy carnival.

We would to take a moment to thank all the helpers and teachers who made our sports day successful, without your help days like these would not be successful. A special thanks to Mr Tobin for all his hard work and support throughout the day! We loved it.

On Wednesday 15th March we both participated in the Galilee Open Day. We each gave a speech about our experiences at Galilee so far and our first day at school.

This term has been super busy, but we have been flexible, enjoyed all of our experiences and are looking forward to what Term 2 has in store for us.

Hockey Report

On the 9th  February 2017, Gaby and Lucas from Hookin' 2 Hockey visited Galilee Regional Catholic Primary School.

We were taught various hockey drills, these skills included how to hold a hockey stick correctly and how to run with a hockey ball.

After we learnt the basics we played Knockout. Knockout is a game where you protect your ball and knock your opponents balls out.

We also played a game called Octopus. Octopus involves three players with a hockey stick trying to get the balls off the other players.

Once a player loses their ball they are out of the game.

Everyone in 4G had a great time. The games were so much fun. If you want to join Hookin' 2 Hockey you can find more information at the following website address phskhockey.org.au.

We did a Marble hunting activity for the children to explore the school area by finding the marbles which had been hidden around the school grounds. We drew a map of the school area and marked the spots where the marbles are located then the children went outside to find the marbles. This activity was a very successful and the children had fun with their friends!

Athletics Day

As you all may know Athletics day was last Friday, the whole school participated and it was lots of fun. We were very excited as it was our very first House Competition!

The day started by the Years Three to Six jumping on a bus and going to Newport Athletics Track. Everyone helped set up and we were able to go straight into our events.

Our first event (Year 5 & 6) was hurdles. It was a great start to the day and everyone did really well. The day went really quickly and by the time we stopped and looked around the day was nearly over.

The parent/student/teacher relay started.

Everyone was running like they have never run before. In the end the parents team came first and then the teachers came second, then it was Navy Blue and finally Galilee Green. Ice White and Majestic Maroon were no where to be seen!

Overall, it was a great day and everyone had a fantastic time!

Congratulations to Majestic Maroon for coming First, Ice White came Second, Navy Blue Third and in Fourth place was Galilee Green.

Why We Should Go Back To Valley Homestead

By Luc B (6C)

Valley Homestead is a wonderful camp that had all sorts of fun things consisting of high ropes courses, vertical challenges, flying foxes and seven metre drop slide. It also helped with team building and the way we surpass obstacles in our way through teamwork. We also encouraged everybody in our groups and conquered our fears. It was one of the most enjoyable camps that Galilee has visited.

At Valley Homestead, we learnt a lot about teamwork and team building. We had to think strategically as a team how we would surpass obstacles in our way. I was given the opportunity to make some new friends in the Year Six community and learnt some of their strengths and weaknesses that we all shared. Teamwork was very important in all of the activities to keep each other safe. One of the examples of this is on the low ropes course, where one person would be on the ground helping their friend to complete the course, because without them it would be almost impossible.

At the beginning of the camp a lot of students were scared of heights. We were all given a chance at every activity but if we didn’t want to do it we didn’t have to. It is important to conquer our fears because in the future it could help us out and we would have more fun. One of the examples of this was the seven meter drop slide, I had never done a drop slide because I was afraid I was going to hurt myself. This year I did it and it was so much fun, so I did it again and again and again!

Some of the courses were quite hard without teamwork and encouragement. Encouragement was really important to me because it was reassuring for people to be telling you you’re safe and to keep going. One of the examples was on the electricity poll activity because without all of the encouragement I wouldn’t have done it. Without out them I would be scared out of my mind to try it.

Overall I think the Year Five students of 2018 should go back to Valley Homestead. The camp was based a lot on team building and working as a team to keep everyone safe. A lot of the Year Five and Six students conquered their fears throughout the camp. We also encouraged each other a lot.

5 and 6 Camp

By Agnes and Lucy from Year 5

On Tuesday the 7th of March, the Year 5 and 6’s left for Valley Homestead in the countryside of Ovens. We were all so excited that when we arrived we were all jumping with joy! After settling into our cabins, Rhonda gave us a briefing of her rules (we were in there for a very long time!).

One of the activities that excited everyone was the Dual Flying Fox. After we got our harness and helmet on, we walked up a very long and hilly path but the walk was definitely worth it. We zipped down the zipline with our partner so fast, that we screamed our heads off.

Power Pole was one of the most nerve-racking activities in the whole camp. You had to climb up a pole with staples and jump off it! You could either jump off a 10 or 7 metre pole, depending if you were a daredevil or not. Loads of people fell off (including Miss Otte)!

For Bush Dancing, we had a man nicknamed Lazy Harry come in. We danced to the Hokey Pokey, Waltzing Matilda, Give Me A Home Among The Gum Tree’s, Heel And Toe Poker and Riverboat, a song written by Lazy Harry himself.

Overall, it was a camp that definitely tested our limits, but we still loved it.
