IN THE GARDEN
Worm Farms
Now that our worm farms are established it was time to learn how to look after them. Over the last two weeks all of the Grade 3 and 4 students have been learning what food worms like to eat, how to keep our worm farm moist, how to avoid the farm smelling. We made Worm Food posters for the classrooms and discussed how we can collect food items from home that would help vary the diet of our worms. Don't be surprised to hear your child asking for the potato peelings from your Tuesday night dinner to bring along to school for the worms on Wednesday. Yesterday the Grade 3 & 4 students learnt about Green Manure, planted beans, peas, garlic and some of the Woolworths pots. We are looking forward to these growing soon.
IN THE KITCHEN
Lettuce cups all round
Over the past two weeks Grade 3 and 4 students have been preparing and enjoying “Fried Rice Lettuce Cups” in the Kitchen. They began their sessions learning three safe knife cutting techniques – the bear grip, the bridge and the rocker. You could ask one of the children to explain these further. We also looked at how a recipe is organised.
Then, it was on with the aprons, washing our hands and preparing the ingredients. Everyone was busy finding ingredients and equipment before they chopped, whisked, mixed, measured, watched, cooked and finally ATE! Each team worked together to create a delicious dish. We talked about the food and made suggestions as to how we could improve our dish. Then it was time to wash and dry our dishes – everyone helped.
Each week there are a pile of tea towels and hand towels to be washed. If you are willing to help with this, please email me (Ros Hill) through Compass and I will develop a roster. The items need to be returned to school by the following Wednesday.
WANTED: Woolworths Discovery Garden Pots
We are collecting any unwanted Discovery Garden pots that Woolworths are currently giving away with a $30 purchase. These plants will be potted and planted in our Kitchen Garden. If you, or any member of your family, have these pots (and do not want to use them in their own garden), please send them along with your child to school.
We are also keen for other donations for the garden. If you have any items to donate to the school please send them along with your child or drop them in at the office off Panfield Ave. Items may include (but are not limited to):
Happy Gardening!
