2021 Nossal House Swimming Carnival

Following the cancellation of most whole-school events last year, it was with great excitement that staff and students from Garuda, Griffin, Pegasus and Phoenix journeyed to Doveton Pool for the first House event of 2021.

With Mr Bird’s enthusiastic commentary ringing out over the pool, races began with our new Year 9s taking to the pool for the first time in their House colours. Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 followed, with each age-group achieving records, personal bests and photo finishes to keep the spectators entertained.

In the toddler pool, Mr Haverfield and Mr Rule’s Water Netball tournament drew crowds as first the Intermediates, then Seniors, battled for top spot in a round-robin competition. Long-range goals and feverish battles for the ball kept the umpires on their toes, as each House recorded wins.

The Splash event was popular once again, with hundreds of laps recorded across the eight-lane pool. Ms Ball lead Griffin strongly with four laps of her best ‘free’ style as Garuda struggled to navigate their blow-up boat through the choppy waters to the finish line.

The relays followed with exciting come-from-behind victories and records beaten as the official races for the day came to an end. But the excitement was not yet over, as the staff battled it out for the title of speediest swimmer. A lane-eight sprint from Mr Gould delivered victory with Mr Bird and Mr Jose rounding out the top-three, and Ms Villiers leading the women.

Thanks to all staff and student volunteers for their assistance in making the carnival such a successful day, and to all swimmers and House Captains for filling races and participating for their House. Winning competitors will be invited to compete at Division Swimming in week 8, followed by Region and State competitions for the best of the best. Bring on our next House events: Cross Country in week 10, and Athletics in early term 2!

Surf Camp

We may not have been blessed with summery weather, but the 2021 Surf Camp was still a wonderful success.  Departing Nossal on the morning of Wednesday 3 March, 24 students from the VCE Unit 1 & 2 PE class set off towards Phillip Island for three days of surf lessons and camp activities. The purpose of the camp was to further study the factors that influence physical activity by analysing the local natural and built environments, and the sport of

efore hitting the water to try their new skills. Challenging conditions made standing difficult, but each student made progress by moving through the routines they had practiced on the beach. After the lesson, the annual game of Holes was played on the beach, with a final-round dive delivering Krisshnaa the win. Then, there were showers to enjoy, BBQs to cook, games of cricket to play and stories to tell as students relaxed in each other’s company and became acquainted with their classmates.

Day two began with breakfast and some stretching before embarking on another surf lesson. The surf coaches confirmed that the conditions on the beach were as difficult as they came, with strong side currents, diagonal rain, irregular and constant sets of waves and heavy swell. However, persistence paid off and our talented bunch were told that they were the best group that the surf school had ever had in such difficult conditions. Thursday concluded with a chilly and windy walk across the bridge to San Remo and a trip into Cowes for dinner, where students enjoyed free time to wander and observe the environment. By this time, bodies were stiffening up and energy levels were faltering, but spirits remained high.

Friday morning dawned with packed bags and tidied cabins as we reached the end of our wonderful trip. Following a festive watermelon to celebrate Shivesh’s birthday, and a few games of forty-forty to wake everyone up, we headed off to our final surf lesson. Conditions were marginally better than the previous day, and skills were obviously improving, as each surfer rode some successful waves and some attempted some steering and tricks.

There were highlights a-plenty out at Smith’s Beach across the three days of lessons. Jess was the first to stand, whilst Krisshnaa’s natural skill made the ‘pop up’ technique look easy. Danial impressed with his rapid improvement and attempted tricks and Harkirat was the longest ‘stayer’, surfing for every minute of the exhausting third day of lessons. Amelia won the award of worst luck as three surfboards collided with her head at once but not even this could keep her out of the water for long. Even Mr Jose managed to catch a few waves, photographic evidence of which was collected by Ms Cilia holding steadfast on the beach.

We couldn’t have been luckier to share the week with these wonderful students – a big thank you to all for your excellent behaviour, sense of adventure and persistence. A massive thanks also to Ms Leslie Cilia for driving the bus and photographing the trip, and to Mr Leigh Jose for his support and willingness to nose-dive and fall off his board to make everyone else feel more comfortable to fail.

Intermediate Girls Cricket

On Tuesday 2 March the Inter Girls Cricket versed Berwick SC girls at Donnelly Reserve in Cranbourne.

Our Captain Gopi won the toss and elected to bowl first. Our Nossal girls had some excellent bowlers who included Sriya, Gopi, Vinamraa, Saki, Jashan and Tiyanie who only bowled 27 wides and no balls in the 20 overs. Berwick made 110.

Nossal’s opening batswomen were Gopi and Saisha. Gopi showed some great leadership throughout the day and great coaching tips to the entire team. Berwick did not have many bowlers and bowled 59 wides and no balls, which made it very hard for our girls to hit many good shots unfortunately. Out top scorer was Sriya. We made a total of 75 runs and were all out in 15 overs.

Congratulations to all of the Inter girl cricketers for their efforts and team work.

Senior Boy’s Cricket

The stakes were high today. If we beat KooReeRup we would be into a final to play the winner of McKinnon versus Melbourne High. In the other game MHS got on top early and ended up winning easily, but our game was up for grabs. We batted first and made a slow and steady start, scoring 2/30 from the first 8 overs. The grass was quite lush and scoring was difficult. Disen Perera was already out by this stage having compiled a useful 10 as an opener. This brought Ben McDonald to the crease. Ben was facing a spinner, the ball, he picked up quickly, was heading down leg side. To play a shot he had to move his pads outside the line of the stumps. Whilst still moving to the leg side he was almost able to shake hands with the square leg umpire. But he missed the ball and was struck high up on the leg, and the umpire gave him out LBW. That was Ben’s story but it didn’t matter as he had now been dismissed for just 1. At this stage Minro Eshwara strolled to the crease to join Dhanusha Gamage who was again batting well. These two combined for a fantastic partnership of 72. Minro made a great 31, but Dhanusha continued the work he had begun when opening and ended up batting for the whole innings and scored 70 not out. Nice little cameo of 10 runs from Rohith Chapalamadugu at the end of the innings too. So, on a slow ground we had scored 130. Would it be enough?

The short answer was no, but it was not without a fight. In the end we lost with just 3 balls remaining. Oh, the disappointment. On the other ground MHS did win easy and but for a couple of runs we could have been playing them in the final. The wicket takers for us were Ben (2 wickets), Rushil Patel (2 wickets), Minro (1) and Aasha Desai (1, which he took with his first ball).

A great pity, but it was a great game. Our boys played very well and had a pretty good run this year. Once again though it is worth commenting that both schools played the game in a brilliant fashion and were a credit to their schools.
