Stage 5

Z-Line Elective

Z-line elective - what is this?

As part of the elective course of study in Stage 5, all students will participate in a Project Based Learning (we call it the Z-line) subject for 100 hours. Students have elected these through their own personal interest and that of the delivering teacher.

What is Project Based Learning?

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.

Students will work on a project for an extended period of time (approximately 15 weeks) that engages them in complex questions relating to real world experiences and problems. Students will create a product or presentation which will be shared with a public audience.

Driving Questions

In PBL we title a project's theme as the 'Driving Question'. It forms the investigative basis of skill and knowledge development for the project. Listed are some of the extremely exciting and engaging Driving Questions that our Stage 5 students will be studying this semester:

  • Hands on History: "How can use traditional methods of espionage and surveillance in the modern day world?"
  • Move It: "How do we as a society avoid the 'dip' in physical activity in today's adolescents?"
  • Out of the Zone Theatre Troupe: "How can we use drama and digital technologies to educate the public about a chosen issue?"
  • How to be Footballer: "How can I improve my performance on the football field?"
  • Anime Manga: " How can we use Anime & Manga to promote a contemporary chosen issue in today's society?"
  • Food Franchise: "How can we create food to use as gifts?"

What is next?

During Week 6 all students visited each other's rooms to view and critique the Project Walls. The Project Wall will assist with the student's organisation of their projects over the semester.

We look forward to displaying the Project Walls over the next few newsletters. Stay tuned for further PBL developments.
