Around the College

ISP News

On 19th February, we invited Mingye Guo to come back to school to meet our International Students to share his experience in preparing for VCE, especially in studying EAL and Maths. Mingye advised us to run a consistent study process, not just run an intensive study when there is a SAC. As per EAL, Mingye suggested trying to use written words in our essay instead of the oral ones we use randomly in daily talking.  Mingye also suggested ISP students be engaged in all school activities since we come to Australia to learn not only academic knowledge but also learn about Australian culture.

We wish Mingye all the best!

Thanks to Ms Fisher for joining us as well.

Year 9 Food Technology

This year Year 9 have electives, my subject is Make, Bake and Decorate. To start the term we have made Funny Faces. Students designed what they were going to make and in the next class they produced biscuits and were taught how to decorate with a piping bag and royal icing. Here are some of their creations and Odelia Ashkar from 9C with hers.

Netball Tournament

Last week we re-commenced the Inaugural GEC Mixed Netball Tournament that was cancelled last year due to Covid-19. The first game of the year was against the Parminder Byrnes’ (Year 9) and the Mixed Netballers (Year 7). The Mixed Netballers showed a lot of spirit as they navigated the netball court for the first time as a team while the Parminder Byrnes’ were looking like they haven't skipped a beat from last year with beautiful connections on court.

With 8 teams contesting for the title and games every Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime it will become a hot contest for whoever is named the first ever title holders. The teams are:

  1. The Mixed Netballers
  2. The Parminder Byrnes’
  3. The Instant Noodles
  4. The Hoses
  5. Trifland
  6. The Sheldon Hoppers
  7. The Masketeers
  8. The Staffers

Already it has been great to see everyone being active and participating, hearing the school hallway conversations and seeing students from across the college reconnect over an event like this.

Enterprise Club 2021

This year we are keen to establish an enterprise club here at Glen Eira College that will be student driven with a focus on providing students with experience in brainstorming, planning, experimenting, implementing and evaluating processes involved with organising an event/running a business.  Students will be provided with the opportunity to demonstrate creativity and initiative while building communication and leadership skills.

One of our initial initiatives is to participate in the share market game. https://www2.asx.com.au/investors/investment-tools-and-resources/play-the-sharemarket-game .  We also plan to run an enterprise at school.

At the moment enterprise club members are busy promoting the enterprise club to boost our numbers. If you want to learn more about what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur then come and join us.

When?  Thursday lunch-time (even week only)

Where?  Room 109

Bring your lunch.

At this stage, we are trying to recruit as many new members as we can!

The more people the better!

As one of the few clubs with funding, it will be a great opportunity for everyone to learn valuable skills about running a business and becoming an entrepreneur.
