Around the School
News from Stage 2 Crimson
by Jessica Fletcher, Brax Hutton and Ms Kelson.
In 3/4 Crimson we have been learning about the Sun and the solar system. We have been thinking of questions we have about the sun and finding out some answers. In HSIE we have been learning about Australia's neighbors, like New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. We have been doing maths, writing and music as well. In maths we designed castles to practice place value, with blocks of ones, tens, and hundreds. In music we learnt a cup routine to 'I'm Still Standing' from the movie Sing, and performed it at assembly. In Art we have been learning about portraits. Earlier in February, we enjoyed going to the Guyra Show and seeing Jessica and Poppy from our class compete in the horse riding events.
The Southern Cross University Tour
by Mrs Helen Doyle
The Southern Universities Tour was a great way to explore universities in Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle. The tour started on Sunday 14th of February and ended on Wednesday 17th of February.
On the 14th of February 8 students departed Guyra with Mrs Helen Doyle. We went on the tour with Oxley High School and Calrossy Anglican School. When we arrived at Wollongong University and stayed at the International House / Kooloobong Village. That night we went to the beach and got ice cream.
On the 15th of February we attended Wollongong University’s Discovery Day. The University of Wollongong Discovery Day is designed to give students a taste of what it’s like in university. We attended a range of short lectures that focused on different areas. In the afternoon we headed towards Macquarie University. That afternoon we had a tour of the University of Macquarie and stayed at Robert Menzies College.
On the 16th of February we went to the University of Sydney where we had a campus tour and visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum. Then we left the University of Sydney and went to the University of NSW for lunch and a campus tour. Finally, we went to the University of Technology and attended different workshops.
On the 17th of February we left Robert Menzies College at Macquarie University and left for the University of Newcastle. At Newcastle we had a tour of the campus and accommodation.
This great experience helped us to learn many things about the process of applying for university. An example of this is all the early entry opportunities and adjustment points for our atars. We also learned about different entry options such as bridging courses if we are unable to get into the course we want straight away.
All the students enjoyed exploring different universities and doing some sightseeing when given time. Overall, the trip was an amazing experience and we are all very grateful for the opportunity to go. Thank you to Mrs Doyle and Mrs Nicholson for the opportunity and support.

Big Picture
Mrs Steph Belson
Big Picture students have been given a challenge. They had a 2 hr time frame to come up with a dominoes design on the table which uses up to 2000 dominoes. Some classes were given a half hour challenge to use 500 dominoes. In completing this challenge, the students are learning patience, teamwork skills, how to strategise and problem solve, how to succeed and that it is ok the fail. The students learnt that they continually had to think on their feet. Go Big Picture students!!

G.C.S Phone Policy - Yondr Update
by Mrs Linley Ryan
A big thank you to parents, community members, students and staff for your support in the implementation of the new phone policy at Guyra Central School. The Yondr pouches have had an amazing positive effect in the classroom and the playground. Negative incidences directly related to inappropriate phone use have dropped by over 40% since the implementation of the policy.
The benefits of the policy include an extraordinary improvement in student engagement in the classroom. There are far less distractions and an improved learning environment for all students. In the playground we have also witnessed dramatic changes. Students are communicating with each other and there has been an increase in participation in recreational pursuits and physical activity in the playground.
