Principals Report

It is difficult to believe that we are now half way through Term 1 2021. We have had a brisk start to the year with many things happening within the school. Our Kindergarten students are settling in well and starting to develop confidence within their new learning environment. It was wonderful to see their bright shinny faces in the front of the hall at our first assembly for the year during Week 5.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the way we operate our school. The NSW Department of Education has continued to work with NSW Health to revise the current advice to schools. NSW Health has agreed to the following activities resuming across all schools in NSW:

  • Parents and carers are able to enter school grounds but should continue to follow COVID-safe practices, including social distancing between adults of 1.5 metres.
  • Parents and carers can attend school sporting events. School sporting events should align with requirements for community sporting competitions and training activities in NSW.
  • There are no recommended limits on singing groups in schools, including for in-class educational activities such as repetition, chanting, recitation, or singing activities. Five metres is recommended between a group of performing singers and other people, including the audience and conductor, where practicable.
  • Dancing activities – including dance classes, formals and social events – can proceed, but organisers should comply with any venue restrictions.
  • Boarding schools have had restrictions lifted on separating cohorts of students to assist in their rooming arrangements and general organisation.

Schools should continue to complete COVID-safe plans for school events where more than 50 adults are gathering. This information became available at the end of week 6 and as a school we are processing the information. We will provide a more detailed account of what we CAN do as a school during Week 7 and Week 8. Information will be published on Facebook and our Website.

It has been a busy time for our senior students. In the past weeks we have had 8 of our Stage 6 students participate in the Southern Cross University Tour. Accompanied by Ms. Helen Doyle, our Careers Advisor, our students were provided with the opportunity to walk the halls of Universities in Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle, staying in University dormitories and having a good look at what University life might look like for them as early as 2022.

One of our Year 12 students, Cordelia Lloyd, has taken her place with other rural students from around Australia to have the opportunity to influence Australian government policy. During 2020 Cordelia was selected to participate within the NSW Youth Ambassador Program, she was then subsequently selected from this group to become one of 8 students to represent as a National Rural Youth Ambassador 2021. Cordelia represents Guyra Central School and the Aurora College. Cordelia is completing some of her subjects through Aurora College, a NSW Department of Remote Learning School, created to bring talented students from rural and remote school into digital classrooms. Cordelia, thank you for your commitment to representing your student colleagues and giving our students a voice in Canberra.

Thanks to all of our community for their continued support
