Premier's ANZAC Memorial Scholarship

Last year, I had the proud honour to represent NSW as an accompanying teacher for the Premier’s ANZAC Memorial Scholarship.

The Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship gives NSW Year 10 and 11 History students the opportunity to travel on a two week study tour to develop their knowledge and understanding of the history of Australians at war. Accompanied by a military historian, the tour includes visits to significant historical sites to learn about and commemorate the service of Australian men and women in the World Wars and other conflicts.

As a passionate history teacher, this was an incredible opportunity.  We had many amazing experiences. Some of these included touring Sydney with ceremonies at the Anzac Memorial, visiting Garden Island and the Naval Heritage Centre, the tour of the Middle Head fortifications, a guided tour of the Q station, two nights  amping at Cockatoo Island, a historic harbour cruise learning about the midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour, a guided tour of the Lithgow Small Arms Factory, a guided tour of Bathurst Carillon, a visit to the Cowra POW camp, Japanese Gardens and a tour of the Goulburn War Memorial.

A love of history

The scholars selected (students from all over NSW) were all interested in History and bonded through a series of activities, including visiting the Abercrombie Caves and ziplining.  However, the real bonding happened over a love and curiosity about history.

Opportunity to participate

This experience was transformating for the students. The chance for a Year 11 Modern History student to participate as a scholar is  now open. Students need to complete an essay about why they should be selected as a scholar. The opportunity is free for lucky selected scholars.  More information is available - please see the link below:

Alternatively, students are more than welcome to chat to me for further information or for help with your application.
