Victorian High Ability Program - Term 1

Term 1 Activities

Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) is a program facilitated by Virtual School Victoria in partnership with DET.

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 are selected to participate in a 10 week virtual extension program in either English or Mathematics which concludes with a Masterclass involving students from the participating network of schools.

At the end of Term 1,  students from our school collaborated with students from other neighbouring schools, meeting at Strathmore Secondary College for a productive VHAP Masterclass. This one-day Masterclass was designed to engage students by asking them to share and reflect on their VHAP experience, as well as evaluating the knowledge gained.

Year 8

The VHAP Masterclass was interactive and interesting, as we did lots of fun English activities while also discussing about our VHAP book. We learned about utopias and the theoretical parts of Utopias and how it relates to our current VHAP book, The Hive. We also had the chance to 'persuasively pitch' our ideas of Utopias to the rest of the class.

Year 8

I did the English VHAP Masterclass  in English and I found it interesting and engaging. My favourite part was when we made up Utopias and had to campaign them to our teachers. We also met people from other schools. Overall I was very happy with the learning opportunity I had been given!

VHAP Maths has been a challenging, yet amazing experience. It has pushed me to improve my problem-solving skills and it has encouraged me to really think outside the box. I learned concepts that were complex, but the environment that was created with the other students allowed me to share my ideas confidently and learn from their ideas and the way they process mathematical problems. It made the challenging side of maths fun, and it is something that is going to be helpful in future.

In the VHAP Masterclass we got to do new topics that stretched us further than classroom work. We did questions that made us think in different ways to the things we usually do in Math. We also got to meet new people from different schools and work with them to further challenge ourselves.
