Celebrating Student Achievement

Amelia Mulhern

Year 12

Last term I had the incredible privilege of being selected to represent Victoria at the Auscycling National Track Championships in Brisbane. I went into the race not really expecting too many big results - I was just happy to make it that far in the first place!

I was completely blown away when my teammate and I received our first national medal together, bringing home bronze in the Madison race. I was originally going to fly home at the end of the week of racing, but after I snagged another third place in a solo scratch final I was asked if I wanted to stay in Brisbane for another week and ride for Australia at the Oceania Championships.

Coming into Oceanias with a fair bit of form and a bit more confidence, we snagged silver in the Madison – stealing the medal from the New Zealand team by just one point!

After the track we moved on to the road (by this time everyone was completely exhausted) for one last race, a 70km road race up Mt Coot-Tha, a giant hill looming over the Brisbane CBD. This time, instead of representing the state or the country, I was riding for my road team that I signed on with earlier in the year.

All of the girls on the team rode so well together, and one of our teamies managed to ride away from the bunch and take home the gold medal and the Oceania Road Champion title. I was so stoked with her result – a projection of all the hard work and commitment that she’s been putting into her riding.

Overall, this experience was absolutely incredible and gave me so much motivation to keep pushing forwards and see where my sport can take me.

I especially want to say a massive thank you to all of my Year 12 teachers.  They have been so understanding and supportive of me as I juggle my school commitments and my cycling career - and the many school absences that have come with it!
