A Cultural Taste Test!
Year 8 Multicultural Feast

Teacher - Food Studies
Food plays a vital role in our lives - we all have to eat!
The food we eat and the way it is prepared is closely tied to our cultural backgrounds, and you can learn so much about a culture by investigating its food.
Our Multicultural Feast event was run at the end of Term 1. Year 8 students were invited to supply a dish that they identified as being intrinsic to their way of life and cultural background. Students served up a veritable feast of delicious offerings - and so many different cultures were represented. Students tasted and compared the dishes, identifying similarities and differences between the food cultures; how different dishes included and used different seasonings, spices, pulses, grains, meat, vegetables and/or dairy products. It was a fabulous way to share food while learning about the origin of dishes.

The Year 8 Multicultural Assignment was a really fun experience.
It was interesting to be able to see all the different cultures people represented and how this is represented in the food they eat.
The food was amazing and we really loved being able to go around the room and taste everyone’s dish.

I really enjoyed this activity, as it was very different but also was very fun. We all came in with our chosen dish and country of origin and I could tell everyone just wanted to get to eating!
There was a wide range of cultures represented including Lebanese, Korean, Italian, Vietnamese, Arabic and so much more.
Every dish I tasted was very thought out, visually intriguing, and executed to perfection. Well done to everyone who made a dish!!
