Literacy and EAL

Just as the students have been busy learning the new routines and expectations of their new learning communities, the teachers have begun a journey to explore Reading Conferences.  With the support of "Teaching Partners" teachers have created a classroom schedule that enables all students to read one on one with their teacher.

What a reading conference looks like

This time of 8 minutes allows the teacher to:

~ listen to the child read

~  model and explicitly teach key reading strategies,

~ reflect upon learning goals in conjunction with the student and create new learning goals

~ discuss the student's comprehension of the book read.

Meanwhile the other students are reading  or working on providing evidence to support their learning goal.

I look forward to working with teachers and students as I begin the next step of my teaching career at Aitken Hill Primary School.
