STEM

An update from Amber and Aaron and the world of STEM at AHPS!

Hello everyone!

Aaron and Amber here - the 2022 STEM teaching team. We are pretty amazed that we've made it this far, and we are super excited to share with you how this term is shaping up for all of our communities. A new team (100% improvement on last year!) and a new building (a new portable, just for STEM!) - all things new and exciting!

To begin with, all communities have started our 2022 STEM journey with two weeks of collaborative challenges and activities.

The Prep communities (Achilles and Luna) have leapt into their STEM learning experience by learning what the letters in STEM represent, and manipulating icy pole sticks into shapes. Now they are working on a series of work to look at the five senses of hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and touching.

The 1/2 communities (Ulysses, Xenica and Argus) kicked off the year by telling us their names in 2D using recycled materials, and tried to build a house for the three little pigs.

Now they are doing a six-week project on Butterflies and Birds in Craigieburn.

The 3/4 communities (Icarus and Apollo) were introduced to the STEM Challenge Design Brief that we are using throughout the year. These inquisitive grade 3s and 4s designed their names in 3D, and had to make a house that could withstand a big, bad WOLF (hair dryer) and the huffing and puffing to blow the houses down!

Icarus and Apollo are now working on a six-week project around the theme of Arid Australia - Drought and coming up with ways to avert the direct effects of a drought through their own designs.

The 5/6 community (Monarch) leapt into STEM Challenge Design Brief, and a challenge to make their names in 3D, and a house without tape that could withstand a big, bad WOLF (hair dryer) and the huffing and puffing to blow the houses down!

Monarch students are now working on a six-week project around the theme of Tsunami Alert, learning about the life cycles of plants, how to research carefully using technology, and how to work collaboratively to come up with a meaningful design.
