What's been happening in Visual Arts?

Luna & Argus Communities (Preps)

In Prep, students have been introduced to the art room for the first time and begun experimenting with some of the materials they will use in Visual Arts throughout primary school. They created the front page to their Visual Diary, using paper collaging techniques, patterns and colour on their name. Students then combined the use of colour apps and paint sticks in the creation of their first self-portrait.

Argus, Xenica & Ulysses Communities (Year 1&2)

The Year 1&2’s have been imagining what they would look like as a Lego-character and creating their own self-portraits in watercolours. Using their imagination, they’ve given themselves costumes and fun outfits, cool accessories and also tried to make it look like themselves in some way (no easy task with elaborate costumes). They will be completing these artworks, by cutting them out and adding a colourful background.

Apollo & Icarus Communities (Year 3&4)

The Year 3&4’s have been exploring the world of Pop Art, noticing the bright, fun colours that are often found in pop art, mixed with images of popular culture (like famous people, characters, comics, food, advertising, etc). Currently they are creating their own artwork, inspired by some of the ideas found in pop art. Students have drawn an image of something popular to themselves, and have worked on turning this image into a stamp on Styrofoam. They have carefully etched their design in the Styrofoam, overcoming challenges with how much force to use with the pencil to create their design. The next step will involve ink, rollers and coloured paper, as they learn to print! Students are looking forward to this step!

Monarch Community (Year 5&6)

In Year 5&6, students have been learning about street art and acknowledging the difference between what is damage, and what is art. After viewing a series of street art examples, they were able to identify some of the features that distinguish art from damage, noting that a lot of graffiti and street art is not allowed (even if it looks amazing)! Following on from this, Year 5&6 created their own ‘tag’, using an app on their iPad, and stylising the font to their own tastes. They are now in the process of building their own miniature fences and are looking forward to transferring their art onto their construction! Watch this space for more updates!
