EXPRESSONS OF INTEREST - MERCY EDUCATION BOARD DIRECTORS

Mercy Education Limited is seeking Expressions of Interest for the position of Director Mercy Education Limited Board. Vacancies have arisen as several current board members are reaching the end of their tenure.

GOVERNANCE

Mercy Education Limited (Mercy Education) is an incorporated ministry of Mercy Ministry Companions. Mercy Ministry Companions is responsible for ensuring, as faithfully as Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy, and those of her sisters who followed, that the Catholic identity, charism, and spirituality of schools previously under the stewardship of the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea, thrive into the future.

There are thirteen schools: nine schools in Victoria, three schools in Western Australia and one school in South Australia. Mercy Ministry Companions delegates the responsibility of these thirteen schools’ governance to Mercy Education.

The governance role of the Board of Mercy Education is confined to these thirteen schools. The Board sets policies, approves schools’ strategic plans, appoints Principals, approves senior leadership positions, and fulfils due diligence in finance and audit management, capital development, risk management and litigation.

CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF MERCY EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA

In 2021 across Australia, we continue to celebrate two hundred years of Catholic Education. For those of us associated with Mercy, the contributions, dedication and unwavering commitment of the Sisters of Mercy to the education of thousands upon thousands of students in their care have been significant.

We are delighted to provide you with a copy of our recently published commemorative magazine, ‘Celebrating 175 years of Mercy Education in Australia.’

This edition is an expression of admiration and thanks for the thousands of Sisters of Mercy whose work has created the strong foundations on which we now stand. May these stories inspire those of us who now carry on this great work!

Our thanks are extended to the many people who have contributed to this magazine. This appreciation, along with our support, is also offered to all who continue to provide a Mercy‑inspired Catholic education for the next 175 years and beyond.

NATIONAL SCIENCE YOUTH FORUM (NYSF)

Anna Joseph was selected to attend National Science Youth Forum 2022. Anna attended an online program for 12 days  which offered an exciting range of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiences for participants across Australia.

Anna was among other 150 Year 12 students across Australia to attend NYSF program.

Ms Rupa Oberoi

Science Learning Area Facilitator

From January 10 to January 25 I had the opportunity to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). NYSF is a national program that brings together students all around Australia, going into year 12, for two weeks to explore areas in STEM, research possible career options, and meet and form relationships with likeminded people from all over the country.

This year, due to COVID, the program was held online, but this gave everyone the opportunity to pick and choose from various sessions to attend based on their areas of interest. Over the two weeks I personally had the opportunity to attend a live tour of the Large Hadron Collider, listen to talks about black hole jets and epigenetics, virtually visit Queensland’s Integrated Pathology centre where I got to see real human specimens and also hear and talk to Nobel Laureates Professor Peter Doherty and Brian P. Schmidt. These amazing sessions were combined with team activities and trivia nights where you got to meet and get to know your own groups and build friendships with many other people.

The NYSF is such an eye-opening program for anyone interested in STEM or who is unsure what they want to do after Year 12. It helps you learn many life lessons, such as making connections, building relationships, and getting your ideas out into the real world.

If you are interested in applying, more information, and the applications can be found on the NYSF website https://www.nysf.edu.au/.
