Celebrating Lunar New Year at Auburn High School

Lunar New Year celebrates the first new moon of the Lunar Calendar and ends two weeks later with the first full moon of the New Year.  2022 is the Year of the Tiger.  It is believed to represent strength and power.

On the 4th of February, Auburn High School brought together international students to celebrate the festival.  Wearing traditional costume, Erica Jin performed a tea ceremony which is called the Taste of Spring and Yula Yao demonstrated calligraphy and wrote on Spring Couplets.  Sally Bui, Emma Luong and Yula then shared with us what Lunar New Year means to them and how they celebrate this festival in their home country.

Ms Karvouni wished all the students a happy New Year and congratulated them on getting through a difficult time without their family.  She also praised the success of the 2021 VCE international cohort.  Ms Karvouni presented every student with a red pocket - giving red pockets is a way of sending good wishes and luck during the Lunar New Year festival.

This event brought together the elements we love about Lunar New Year:  sharing each other’s company and sending our best wishes to each other.
