From the Assistant Principal

Years 7-9

Kristie Satilmis

Welcome!

A warm welcome to our new and returning AHS students to the 2022 school year.  It has been wonderful to see students settling in so well, getting back into positive routines and interacting with their peers and teachers.  Our Year 7 students have already found their feet and are well into the swing of high school life.

The Friends of Auburn High School look forward to hosting some social events as the year unfolds and welcoming our parent/guardian community back onsite after the hiatus of the last two years.

We love to share the events and achievements of our students with our wider school community throughout the year.  As well as our fortnightly newsletter, The Arrow, our school Facebook page is updated frequently and is a great window into the day-to-day happenings at Auburn High School.  We also publish The Phoenix, our school yearbook, toward the end of each year.  Parents are also encouraged to check the Compass newsfeed regularly, once or twice each week, for other news and information.

Building update

The marathon has become a sprint as we near the end of our $6M Stage 1 capital works project.  There have been some delays due to Covid-related supply and labour shortages, but our building team are doing everything they can to bring the project to completion.  They have worked right through the summer holidays, over weekends and public holidays and the end is in sight!  We look forward to finally switching on our new heating/cooling system on by the end of term.

Thanks to the generous contributions of AHS families to our Building Fund, we have completed construction of four big new classrooms and a light, bright library space, a $300K project.  Finishing touches and new furniture will follow over coming days and weeks, but classes are already enjoying working in the new spaces.

Construction will soon commence on our new $10.15M senior school building and some further upgrades to the main building.  I look forward to sharing progress updates as this project gets underway.  In other exciting news, our Shade Sail Grant application was recently approved.  Construction of a new shaded space is due to take place this semester.

Peer support

Thank you to our Year 7 transition team and Year 10 student leaders for their work in preparing for our Peer Support Program.  In the program, Year 10 student leaders will work with groups of Year 7 students weekly for the first few weeks of term, where they will run a variety of activities and workshops to help our new cohort settle into life at Auburn.  The first session took place this week.  Well done to all involved.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisation program

Boroondara Immunisation Service will be conducting the regular National Immunisation Program (meningococcal, HPV, Diptheria/ Tetanus/ Whooping cough) back onsite in March.  Further information and consent packs will be distributed in the coming days.  Please note this program does not include any form of Covid-19 vaccination and students are encouraged to access the Covid vaccine through their GP, pharmacy or local hub.

Instrumental Music

The AHS Instrumental Music program is back up and running for 2022, with tuition available in keyboard, guitar and bass guitar, voice, woodwind and drums.  There are very limited places available.  Please contact the office to sign up or to find out more.

I look forward to seeing you (virtually) at our upcoming Meet the Teacher evening and wish everyone a wonderful return to school.
