Turkey and Syria Earthquakes - OXFAM Fundraiser

The news of the intense earthquake in Turkey and Syria and the resultant devastation, has provoked a genuine and emotional response from communities around the world.

Among our families there are many with Turkish and Syrian heritage and connections. On behalf of our school community, we would like to express our sympathy to those directly impacted by this tragedy as well as to acknowledge the worry and uncertainty of the rescue period, and the long recovery period ahead for those with loved ones in these regions. We were saddened to hear one of our students lost his grandfather in the earthquake. Our deepest and sincerest condolences go out to all who have been affected.

Parents may like to have a conversation with their young person about this event given the media coverage. Parallels can be made with natural disasters we are more familiar with in Australia such as fire and flood. It is an opportunity to for reflection and gratitude, as well as to sympathise with others facing adversity and loss.

Greenvale Primary School would like to take the opportunity to share the link to the Oxfam Australia Donation Page, to support those impacted by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria which took place on February 6, 2023.

If you would like to donate, please click on the link below and follow the instructions listed on the website:

Insurance

Personal Accident

Just a reminder to all families that the DET does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students whilst at school, including the cost of ambulance attendance / transport and any other transport costs. Student accident insurance/ambulance cover policies are available from some commercial insurers.

Personal Property

Personal property is often brought to school by students and includes staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. As the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property students are discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.
