INITIALIT: Spelling, Grammar & Reading Comprehension, Story Book

The following information will give families an outline about InitiaLit Year 2 and what is involved in reading. 

Fortnightly bulletins will be shared with parents about the learning in English, and what to practise at home.  

Grammar

Learning Intentions

Students Will:

be able to identify common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns

  • be able to identify noun groups
  • be able to use adjectives to describe a noun
  • be able to identify and use verbs and adverbs 

Spelling and Writing

Learning Intentions

Students Will:

  • know digraphs
  • know high frequency / tricky words
  • identify syllable patterns.
  • know silent letters
  • understand spelling patterns.
  • develop phonemic awareness.
  • understand compound words
  • be able to describe the features of an imaginative and persuasive text
  • sort words according to spelling patterns and apply them in various contexts
  • write texts for different purposes
  • use capital letters and full stops in the correct place

 

 

 

 

Reading 

Learning Intentions

Students Will:

  • use high frequency words
  • read independently, in pairs, small groups and choral activities
  • be able to read fluently with expression
  • use oral language in all areas of English

Reading Comprehension

Learning Intentions

Students Will:

  • be able to visualise
  • make connections to the text
  • be able to predict
  • identify the main idea of a text
  • apply reading comprehension strategies when answering questions
  • understand the purpose of texts.
  • understand word meaning

Story Book

Students Will:

  • develop vocabulary and oral language through literature
