ENGLISH YEAR 1 

INITIALIT:   Spelling, Story Book, Phonics, Reading and Writing.

The following information will give families an outline about InitiaLit Year 1 and what is involved in reading. 

 

Fortnightly bulletins will be shared with parents about the learning in English, and what to practise at home.  

 

Learning Intentions.

Students will:

  • identify the number of syllables in a word
  • know letter names
  • know letter-sound correspondence
  • know Tricky Words
  • know the vowel sounds
  • identify and recall which letters are vowels and consonants
  • spell individual words with a target sound
  • write super sentences
  • use punctuation accurately
  • write imaginative and persuasive texts
  • be exposed to a wide range of vocabulary
  • actively listen and respond during discussions.
  • explain personal opinions orally using inferences and predictions.
  • engage in conversations and discussions with peers about stories.
  • contribute to group discussions about stories, characters and events.
  • respond to simple questions during group discussions.
  • read decodable texts.
  • read CV, CVC, CCVC, CVCC and CCVCC words using knowledge of sounds.
  • read aloud to practise fluency
  • respond to punctuation whilst reading
  • apply self correcting strategies whilst reading
  • monitor comprehension by checking for understanding
  • spell and write compound words, homophones and contractions.
  • spell using knowledge of consonants and vowels (short and long vowels); digraphs, trigraphs
  • apply knowledge of taught spelling rules and concepts eg vowel sound ‘y’; suffixes; plurals; bossy ‘e’; floss rule and prefixes.
