Duke of Edinburgh

On Wednesday at lunchtime in during weeks 6 and 7, the Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh students facilitated a range of fun lunchtime activities for the year 7 and 8 students. These activities were designed to promote physical, social, emotional and mental health for students at Blackburn High School.

During class time the students had to focus on a range of areas to ensure that their activities could run safely and effectively. They needed to consider the available spaces, equipment, supervision, risk assessment, and of course the promotion to get students involved. Activities ranged from multi-sport competitions, dodgeball, 3v3 basketball, and handball to capture the flag, cooking challenges, and wii sports.

Below are some comments from students that were involved:

Year 7 – “I had heaps of fun in the cooking activity, it was really tricky trying to cook blind, I think I made a pretty big mess, but the treats were yummy and I had a lot of laughs”

Year 8 – “Having structured activities at lunchtime gave me and my friends something to do at lunchtime, the chocolate prizes were a pretty good bonus!”

Year 9 – “It was a bit scary not knowing how many students were going to turn up and if they would enjoy it, mainly because we put a lot of effort into the planning process. Overall it was much more successful than we thought, it seems that Year 7s love any opportunity to win a prize”

Year 11 students – “I wish I was given the opportunity to do something like this at lunchtime when I was in year 7!”

Teacher – “Some really creative ideas, and such a positive response from all students involved.”
