English

Reading continues to be a focus for the English Department in 2019. A recent study by the UCL Institute of Education used PISA data to assess the best type of reading to boost students’ comprehension capability. They found that students who regularly read fiction averaged an extra 26 points on their PISA scores, the equivalent of 10 months’ extra schooling (as judged by the OECD’s scoring on PISA). The graph below summarises the results and a more detailed discussion of the findings can be read here.

The study provides more evidence of the benefits of students regularly reading fiction, an idea best ensconced in the English Department’s Reading Program. All students in Years 8-11 should currently be reading a novel as part of their study of English. Our intention is to develop students’ comprehension, concentration, memory, imagination and knowledge.

Reading comprehension was also examined as the first section of the recently completed HSC Examinations. Mater Dei students reported some thoughtful responses to the examination questions. As always, the best preparation came from broad and deep knowledge of the prescribed texts and extensive practice writing to articulate students’ responses to each module. We look forward to seeing their results.
