Senior School

The Senior School has settled back into routine and it is such a pleasure to have a building buzzing and filled with students talking about the latest SAC or assessment, interacting with staff, laughing with their peers and enjoying being present at camps and sports carnivals. We have had a very positive start to the year and are all looking forward to activities and events planned for later this year.

Debating has begun and we are fortunate to have our 2021 School Captain, Alexander Logan, return as a coach for our teams. It is wonderful to have former students return to give back to the School as volunteers or coaches.

Year 12

We are now seven weeks into the school year and the Year 12 students are well and truly into the swing of things. It has been a very busy few weeks, with the first round of SACs now completed and many students already beginning to prepare for the second round.  We have had the House Swimming and Athletics carnivals and the Year 12 camp.

Our Year 12 magazine committee will update you all on these and other activities, so I will leave it to them to share their experiences. I will say, however, that the camp was a wonderful experience for all, with three full days of activities, and we were very lucky with the weather and conditions. I would like to thank the Year 12 pastoral team, Louis Panagopoulos, Michelle Mascaro and Hui Harvey for their support and efforts to make the camp a memorable one for our Year 12s. We are very lucky to have such energetic, committed and enthusiastic support for the students in Year 12 this year.

Year 12 Camp 2022 - Student reflections

The school camp was a fun experience with many opportunities for the students. Not only did it provide time for the year 12s to relax after a stressful start to the year, but it also allowed opportunities to be active and make one of a kind memories.

The Year 12 camp was a really fun experience. We got to swim with seals and go surfing. It gave us all an opportunity to get close and bond. The highlight of the camp for me was our dessert competition. We were all running around and screaming trying to finish in time although our group got robbed with equal first.

Year 12 camp was very enjoyable. Swimming with the seals was definitely a highlight for the camp. Hanging out with friends and investigating “the lurkers” mystery and the haunting of Whitehall with my friends was very interesting and fabulous! I also enjoyed winning Mario Kart every time that I played. It was very enjoyable and a good last camp.

Year 12 camp was fun and the activities were very exciting. Being able to swim with seals and hang out with friends was a highlight and a memory that won’t be forgotten. Investigating the secret with the lurkers' mystery and the hauntings of Whitehall was very exciting and spooky! Playing Wii and winning was also good 🤞🏽

Camp was absolutely fabulous! My favourite part of it all were the two boat trips! I loved the calming waves and how nauseous I felt during the entirety of it! I also enjoyed the haunting of Whitehall house, the lurkers were a very scary yet fun experience with my friends. I also liked playing Yoshi and beating everyone in Mario Kart.

The Year 12 camp was an amazing experience, to start the year off, the water activities were the main highlight of the camp, as well as being able to create new connections in the cohort is what topped off my experience. Another thing that I enjoyed was the dessert cook-off.

Camp was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences I've ever had.

Surfing was really fun, but swimming with the seals was a major highlight for me.

I enjoyed spending time with my friends and other year 12 students, and beating the teachers in Uno.

Year 12 camp was a memorable and fun experience. One of my favourite parts was on the first night when we had a dessert-making competition, which was really fun to participate in. The overall camp was a really good bonding experience and we made a lot of memories that I will never forget.

Years 10 and 11

Week 7 saw Oakleigh Grammar students compete at the annual House Athletics Carnival at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve. It was pleasing to see so many of the Years 10 and 11 cohort participate in events, assisting staff, or at the fundraising stall. Congratulations to all our athletes who participated or won a placing for themselves and their house.

Year 10 are working towards their Service as Action outcomes and are starting to gain some momentum with their fundraising contributions at the House Athletics Carnival and Meow Rescue. Students will be provided with ongoing opportunities to contribute to service at Oakleigh Grammar and beyond.

Meanwhile, Year 11 is launching its own service activity and will participate in the Mother’s Day Classic. Students will be raising funds to go towards breast cancer research, a disease that impacts so many. They will then participate in the walk on Sunday 8 May. The event is a great opportunity for our students to take some time to give back to the community and to contribute to awareness about breast cancer and its widespread impacts.

Should you and your child be interested in participating in the Mother’s Day Classic, please ask your child to contact me for a permission slip.

Monash Women’s Business Network International Women’s Day Luncheon

To celebrate International Women’s Day last week, Oakleigh Grammar was invited to attend a luncheon hosted by the Monash Women’s Business Network. I was delighted to represent the School and was accompanied by two of our Senior School students who share their experience below.

On Wednesday 9 March I was fortunate to attend The Monash Women’s Business Network International Women’s Day lunch, together with Olivia McLeod and Mrs. Frame.  We heard from a very successful woman, Olivia Carr, about her struggles that were turned into her greatest successes.  The lunch was extremely empowering with women together celebrating greatness amongst each other.

I would just like to say a massive 'thank you' to the Monash Women’s Business Network for the invitation to attend this lunch.   I have taken many things away from this day, such as, by doing the right things, putting the people and the planet before anything else, the rest will fall into place and success is bound to be achieved.

Charlotte Tsitas

On Wednesday 9 March, I was lucky enough to be invited, alongside Charlotte Tsitas and Mrs Frame, to attend The Monash Women’s Business Network International Women’s Day Lunch. The main speaker of the event was Olivia Carr. I found her talk inspirational and she definitely changed my perspective in taking care of the environment. She shared her personal struggles and how she was able to overcome them to create quite a successful business. Throughout the event we were also able to network with other successful businesswomen. I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the IWD lunch and to celebrate such an important day.

I would also like to say thank you very much to the Monash Women’s Business Network for this great opportunity to attend the lunch.  I have learnt so much from it and it also felt amazing to be around so many empowering women. I have definitely changed a lot of my thoughts and habits after this event.
