Sport Captain

Jemma Keefe

At last week’s captains’ assembly, we revealed our motto for the year, inspire to aspire. As part of the launch for this year’s motto, captains were asked to choose a person who has inspired them and explain how they aspire to lead like this individual. The person who inspires me is Noosa athlete Alexa Leary. You may have seen her story over the news, but to summarise Alexa was a top triathlete on track to compete for Australia at upcoming Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Last year she suffered a horrific bike accident and doctors predicted she would sadly never walk or talk let alone fulfill her dream of being an Olympic athlete. If you have been following Alexa’s story, you would know that she has proved doctors wrong as she is now, not even a year after her accident, out of rehab and competing for Noosa Swim Club at the state championships - and doing extremely well. This year I aspire to lead like Alexa as I want to encourage students to get involved in sport and make memories whilst being active with their friends. Alexa’s story reinforces that it is so important to take care of our bodies and to be active while we can.

This year has been unpredictable to say the least but with the ease of restrictions and hopefully no more flooding things will feel more normal in Term 2. Signups for Term 2 sports closed last week, and I congratulate those students who signed up for a team and wish you good luck at trials in the coming weeks. I’d also like to give a shoutout to those students who are participating in sport this term – I know this season hasn’t been ideal, but I hope that you are still enjoying yourselves, learning new skills and forming friendships at training. I would also like to give a special mention to the individual sports captains as well as the sports committee who have been working hard to promote sport throughout the college and plan events for next term.

If you did miss signups for sport next term, or if you are just looking for something to do remember there is runclub, swimfit and bootcamp happening right now. These programs are very flexible and are perfect if you are just wanting to try things out to find what you might like – so I highly encourage you all to come along one morning and give something a go. I will admit I’m not much of a morning person, but keep in mind Alexa’s story and please give sport a go and move while you can!
