2022 House Swimming Carnival

Swimming was back at Cheltenham this term with the whole college venturing off to Oakleigh Swimming Pool for our house swimming carnival fiesta! We had fantastic pool participants throughout the day, across numerous races and novelty events, including a great staff vs student race. The atmosphere created by the crowd, watching and cheering really made the day a special event. Arakoola took home the silverware for what was a great day for everyone. Thanks to all of the students and staff for their support in the setup and organisation of the event. Congratulations and thank you to all of the students for your attendance.

District Swimming

After their success at the Cheltenham Swimming Carnival, the following students headed back to Oakleigh Swimming pool to represent Cheltenham in the Beachside District Finals. Well done to all of our swimmers who competed in various events and congratulations to Freddie H., who went on to the Southern Metro Finals at MSAC for the 50 Metre Backstroke.

Junior School Sport Community

With so little sport played in the last few years, there was much anticipation amongst our junior cohort. Many students struggled to decide which sport to choose from and when teams filled up and bus numbers reached capacity, some students (even at the last minute) were asked to play a sport that they had never played before.

I applaud and thank all the students who stepped out of their comfort zone and took on the challenge of "just have a go!". Without these students, some of the teams would not have been able to field a side and therefore forfeit the game.

Year 8 Interschool Sport

Congratulations to the Year 8 Cricket Girls Team. The excited team jumped into the 12 seater van (perfect size for a cricket team), cranked up the music (poor Mr Collings) and hit the road. Sadly to find out that the opposition had withdrawn at the last moment. The Girls will play Southern Metro Finals in October.

Year 8 Softball and Baseball was postponed and later combined with the Year 7 Round Robin which made for a full day of games. The Year 8 Girls Softball came away as the victors in their year level and will play Southern Metro Finals on May 11.

Leading up to the Year 8 Sports, Cheltenham were notified that we were the only school in our Beachside district to nominate a Lawn Bowls team, therefore moving straight into the Southern Metro Finals, which took place on March 25. Lachlan, Jett, Axel and Cooper stretched out in the 25 Seater bus (not perfect for a lawn bowls team) and headed to Hampton. Our Cheltenham Year 8's didn't let the Year 9 experience and age of Brighton Secondary College worry them and kept their cool right until the last end. While the scoreboard didn't reflect a win to us, Brighton 8 to Chelt 6, the boys just got better as the game continued. Every end needed the official measuring tape with Lachie our man of the match, finishing the game with a double.

Year 7 Interschool Sport

When the message went out to bring their runners to school one week before sport day, the Year 7 Cricket Boys did not disappoint. Mr Mazurek was very impressed with the turnout at the gym and as the Year 8 Cricket Boys returned from their sports day, a cricket match was underway. What a training session to watch! This brought many smiles to nearby staff members as they watched the two teams enjoying the unplanned moment.

On the morning of Year 7 Sport the cricket team had suddenly lost a few players due to illness, so again thank you to the Year 7 community who stepped up to help out other teams. Without the likes of Jacob Crossley, who walked to the cricket ground with a tennis racquet in his bag, the cricket team would not have been able to field a side. The Year 7 Cricket team played 3 games for the day and won all 3 with just 8 players on the field. They head to the Sothern Metro Finals in October.

Congratulations to those who played in the Year 7 Boys Baseball Games, winning their year level competition and heading to the Southern Metro Finals on May 4. I'm sure some training sessions will be arranged as soon as we return to school in Term 2.

Year 7 & 8 Softball
Year 7 & 8 Softball

Our Softball girls will also be going to Southern Metro Finals on May 13. Thank you to the girls who wanted to play volleyball or cricket but instead helped this team to make its required numbers.

Volleyball Boys headed to the twinkling lights of MSAC as told by Mr Knox, "We tried hard all day and saw some significant improvement throughout our matches. We clinched a set against one of the top-performing teams, something we were all proud of."

Netball and Basketball Academy

Cheltenham Secondary College would like to wish our Basketball Academy coach, Eliza West the best of luck as she takes to the Adelaide Oval this Saturday to represent the Melbourne Football Club in the AFLW Grand Final.

Training is underway and our Sports Academies met their Coaches last week.  The new Academy uniforms have arrived and you will see our Basketball Academy in action at Open Night.

Avenues Exchange

To the Cheltenham Secondary College Community,

It is with deep regret and sadness that I inform you that the 2022 Avenues Exchange will be cancelled once again.

The Victorian Department of Education has made the decision to ground all interstate travel, with no indication of when this will change. This will prevent us from travelling to South Australia. If the travel ban is lifted later this year, this will be too late to make the complicated travel arrangement to pursue the Exchange in 2022.

The offer has been made to Avenues College to take part in the Exchange program at Cheltenham, however, Avenues have declined the offer, considering the health and safety of their own students, given the level of Covid 19 Cases in Victoria.

Please keep in mind that some of the Avenues students are from remote areas of South Australia and returning home unwell could be extremely harmful to their communities.

As a college, we endeavour to return The Exchange to its feet once again but for now, will again have to be patient. As teachers and education support staff, we have thoroughly enjoyed watching the students return to sport and activities in 2022 and hope that they will continue to do so, as sign up for interschool sports in term 2 will be available soon.

If students would like to continue training in any of The Exchange activities for fitness or just for fun, perhaps even some in school competition, please see Mrs Hargreaves who can work on arranging this.

Yours Sincerely

The Exchange Team - Mr Collings, Miss Farrington-Williams & Mrs Hargreaves
