YEAR 11 VCAL GARDEN BOX PAINTING

The Painting of the Garden Boxes was done by the VCAL Intermediate 2022 class on Tuesday 22nd of March. The students were to pair up (some in groups of 3) and paint one and/or maybe two boxes in the college house colours of red (Arakoola), yellow (Pampari), green (Thalera) and blue (Killara). This was the first practical project of the year for the VCAL class.  Each student was to show that they were capable of the 7 Employability skills. The skills were:

  1. Communication
  2. Teamwork
  3. Problem Solving
  4. Initiative/Enterprise
  5. Planning/Organizing
  6. Self Management
  7. Technology.

Firstly, the students came to school with school uniforms on, but they were asked to bring clothes that they did not care to get paint on. Most of the students accomplished this and got straight to work. Using teamwork, communication and a bit of leadership the students lifted the 8 wooden garden boxes up and placed thin plastic sheets under them. The plastic sheets were there so that paint would not get on the school floor in the process of painting. The plastic sheets, as well as paint, paint rollers and brushes, were provided by the school. Next, paint was put into trays and one each was given to a pair, with a roller and brush in hands.

Next, the pair started to paint, only working on one plank on the inside and then all the visible wood on the outside. They then swapped halfway, between the roller and the brush. It took about 20-30 minutes to paint a box with one coat. The pair then switched to a second box where they would do the same, they were careful to not spill any paint from the trays, and they were also careful to not spill any paint when getting more from the teacher. When the second box was done, they were to work on doing a second coat on the first box, they then did this to the second when the first box was done. Both boxes were left to dry for half an hour after painting. When the boxes were finished the plastic sheets were removed, the paint trays, brushes and rollers were washed, and the students left just in time for lunch.

The 7 skills:

  1. The students communicated well, with the teacher and themselves. Some of the pairs wanted to take turns using the roller and brush, so they optimized times for when to switch between them.
  2. The students communicated and worked with each other when they were placing the plastic sheets under the boxes.
  3. The students did the sides and corners as they were a common problem of where to paint.
  4. The students managed to not ask for help every 5 seconds so they took initiative for themselves.
  5. The students helped out with the planning and organizing of the project in class.
  6. The students soon got the gist of doing the painting, switching between the boxes.
  7. Each student that participated in the painting learnt how to paint and use both a roller and brush respectively.

During the painting, the students got some paint on their clothes, shoes and pants, which was, unfortunately, part of the experience. The teacher gave tips to the students and made sure they weren’t going to paint the school floor. This practical took away two thirds of the day which was definitely a success for a first major practical.
