Doctors in Secondary Schools

In our last newsletter, there was some information regarding the Doctors in Secondary School Program. In this edition, I thought we might focus on the service and provide you further information.

The Doctors in Secondary School program is serviced by the Eastern Medical Centre. Their practice is located in Cleeland Street, Dandenong. We currently have 2 doctors, Dr Dallas Smith and Dr Shu Min Chin, and a practice nurse, Sharon Okele, who attend the program. The two doctors attend on alternate weeks to provide the opportunity for students to see a male or female doctor.

The school practice is part of the Government program and the surgery is located in a fully refurbished room at the school (A28). The service is provided free of charge to all students at Dandenong High School. Below are photos of the space which now has a Waiting Area, the Doctor’s surgery and the Practice Nurse’s Office.

How can a student make an appointment?

Appointments can be made in a range of ways. Students can book through:

  • the General Office of the school
  • a member of their House Leadership Team
  • a member of the Wellbeing Team
  • the Practice nurse during her hours of service at school (Thursdays 10am-2pm)

Can parents make an appointment for their child?

Yes, you can. This can be done by contacting the General Office and one of the staff there will make the appointment for you. You could also contact a member of your child’s House Leadership Team and they can also arrange the appointment.

Does my child have to attend without me?

No, they don’t. The service is available directly to students, but if a parent wishes to attend you can also do this. You simply come to the school a few minutes prior to the appointment time, sign in, and you will be able to meet your child at the surgery.

If you have further questions, you can contact the Practice Nurse when she is available at the school, or David Ogden who is the Leader of Student Support Services at the school.
